I hope/wish that my birthday party would be a smashing success on friday.

Granted, you get put in a neoprene soundproof and airproof cubicle, and the hawk takes the cat 100 miles away, where the hawk gets eaten, in a spin of irony. There is only one door to the cubicle, and it opens from the outside only. Oh wait. There is a small airhole. About one inch large.

I wish there was a rollercoaster called 'Dilbert's Flying Cubicle.'

Granted! you ride it and the weight of the cubicles makes the track collapse from stress. you wind up in ICU for 6 months and live off a ventilator

You have a soundproof neoprene cubicle. But it's soundproof only from the outside noises. No sound can get in or out. And when you got inside, somehow about 20 angry hornets did, also. And no one can hear you yelling for help....


I wish my car could fly, used a half-gallon of gas to get to work, and cleaned smog out of the polluted air.

Granted, but everyone else gets them too (fair's fair, and someone has to manufacture them, and do you really think they'll only make one?), thus:

a)the mortality rate from car crashes skyrockets,
b1)people hoard the money they save on gas and the economy collapses
b2)countries whose oil is pretty much their only export see a rise in terrorism to everyone in the country (because they kill everyone who doesn't agree), which organizes worldwide into a destroy-all-countries-with-cars-in-them evil conspiracy (forgetting that every country has cars), and long story short, the world ends as far as the human race is concerned.
c)it will turn out that what we know as "smog" didn't, in fact, result from pollution, but was a natural and essential process in the life span of Earth, and since we have preempted this process, the world ends as far as all life on the planet is concerned.

I wish that I was as awesome as Neal Stephenson (the author) is in my mind, and no injuries or misfortunes befall me or anyone or anything else anywhere or any time for any reason relating to this decision.

Congratulations, your wish has been granted, but with all those provisos you become a lawyer. You spend your entire life writing the small print that appears at the bottom of all guarantees and licence agreements.

I wish I had more enthusiasm for repairing my old house.

Granted, you are now overly enthusiastic about making the repairs, however you don't have the funds to go with your enthusiasm.
