SLEEP KEEPS ME AWAKE -- Michelle Shocked

Sleep comes creepin' in, at 4 in the morning,
Sneakin' up the stairs, shoes in her hand.
"Don't you know what time it is? I been worried about you, darlin'.
I think the least that you could do is phone to say you'd be late."

Sleep keeps me awake all night. Oh, I wonder where she is right now.
I told her if she's late to call, or don't come home at all.
Last week it was 1 a.m. This week it was 2 a.m.
Last night it was 3 a.m., and tonight, it's 4 in the morning

Don't you worry about that now ... you come lay down beside me, darlin'.
Let me hold you in my arms ... let me hold you in my arms.
Let me kiss you, kiss you darlin' ... let me hold you ..... (fade)

Jethro Tull

RAINBOW BLUES

Through northern lights on back streets
I told the coachman, "Just drive me on,
It's the same old destination
but a different world to sing upon."
So he threw back his head and he counted.
I jumped out about five to nine.

And I waved at the stage door-keeper
said, "Mister, get me to the stage on time."
Oh, but the rain wasn't made of water
and the snow didn't have a place in the sun
so I slipped behind a rainbow
and waited till the show had done.

I packed my ammunition.
Inside the crowd was shouting, "Encore",

But I had a most funny feeling
it wasn't me they were shouting for.
So when the tall dark lady smiled at me
I said, "Oh, baby let us go for a ride."
And we came upon two drinks or four
and popped them oh so neatly inside.

Oh, but the rain wasn't made of water
and the snow didn't have a place in the sun
so we slipped behind a rainbow
and lay there until we had done.

Let me pack you deep in my suitcase.
Oh, there's sure to be room for two
or you can drive me to the airplane
but don't let me catch those rainbow blues.

LA CIGARRA -- Mercedes Sosa
(she was a survivor of Argentina's "dirty war" of the 1970s ... exiled, outlawed, but never gave up her resistance ... this song basically says "they killed me over and over ... as many times I died ... but yet here I am alive, and singing, singing to the sun, like the cicada after a year underground ... just like a survivor returning from the war." It's a beautiful song ... Mercedes Sosa was a beautiful woman, she had a voice like Mother Earth, and I cried when she died last year.

Cuantas veces me mataron, tantas veces me morí,

Cuantas veces me borraron, tantas desaparecí,
A mi propio entierro fui, sola y llorando

You say I look fine, if only you knew what's on my mind.
You'd see a whole different side, I couldn't show you even if I tried.
I must have got lost in time when I found out I was only free to be, where ever I want to be.

Windmills of Your Mind

Round, like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel.
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
Like a snowball down a mountain
Or a carnival balloon
Like a carousel that's turning
Running rings around the moon

Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on it's face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Like a tunnel that you follow
To a tunnel of it's own
Down a hollow to a cavern
Where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving
In a half forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble
Someone tosses in a stream.

Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on it's face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Keys that jingle in your pocket
Words that jangle your head
Why did summer go so quickly
Was it something that I said
Lovers walking along the shore,
Leave their footprints in the sand
Was the sound of distant drumming
Just the fingers of your hand

Pictures hanging in a hallway
And a fragment of this song
Half remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong
When you knew that it was over
Were you suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the colour of her hair

Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
As the images unwind
Like the circle that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Pictures hanging in a hallway
And the fragment of this song
Half remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong
When you knew that it was over
Were you suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the colour of her hair

Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
As the images unwind
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Downhere - Great are you.

How I love Your works
My God, My King
How I love Your works
My God, My King

Your Name rings on the plains
Like a not so distant train
And Love and history are near
In the flowers that you make
The flowers that you make

CHORUS

Because I'll never hold the picture
Of the whole horizon in my view
Because I'll never rip the night in two
It makes me wonder
Who am I, Who am I, Who am I
And great are you

How I love Your Word
My God, My King
How I love Your Word
My God, My King

Your love cuts through these pages to my heart
As you grieve our sins, right from the start
And sacrifice and paradise are in
The plans that you made, The plans that you made
Chorus (2x)

MOONLIGHTING by Al Jarreau

Some walk by night
Some fly by day
Nothing could change you
Set and sure of the way

Charming and bright
Laughing and gay
I'm just a stranger
Love the blues and grays

There is the sun and moon
They sing their own sweet tune
Watch them when dawn is due
Sharing one space

Some walk by night
Some fly by day
Something is sweeter
When you meet along the way

So come walk by night
Come fly by day
Something is sweeter
'Cause we met along the way

We'll walk by night
We'll fly by day
Moonlighting strangers
Who just met on the way
Who just met on the way
Who just met on the way

"Homecoming Queen"

It's been five years since Ive seen her face
She's the holy ghost lost without a trace
And now were left with the what ifs
It's been five years since she left for LA
She's an angel with a dirty face
And it seems to me
She's a casualty of all the pressure
That we put on her
And now we've lost her for good
It's such a shame shame shame
That our homecoming queen
Was a lot like you and a lot like me
And she never walked on water
Guess no one really saw her

She was so adored by everyone
When it came to looks she was next to none
But loved partying and having too much fun
Then she hooked up with the wrong someone
And he promised everything under the sun
And it seems to me
She's a casuality of all the pressure
That he put on her
And now we've lost her for good
It's such a shame shame shame
That our homecoming queen
Was a lot like you and a lot like me
And she never walked on water
Cause no one really saw her
It's such a shame shame shame
That our homecoming queen
Had a lot to prove and so many to please
She's just somebody's daughter
Just looking for somebody to love her

Well I never knew you
Wish I could've saved you
From losers that drained you
Before you got strung out
With so much potential
How could you let us down
It's such a shame shame shame
That our homecoming queen
Was a lot like you and a lot like me
And she never walked on water
Cause no one really saw her
Shame shame shame
That our homecoming queen
Had a lot to prove and so many to please
She's just somebody's daughter
Just looking for somebody to love her
She's just somebody's daughter
Just looking for somebody to love her

It's such a shame shame shame...

"Get Off of My Cloud"

by The Rolling Stones
(music and lyrics by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards)

I live on an apartment
An the ninety-ninth floor of my block
And I sit at home lookin' out the window
Imaginin' the world has stopped

Then in flies a guy
Who's all dressed up just like the Union Jack
And says, I've won five pounds
If I have his kind of detergent pack?

I said, Hey, you, get off of my cloud
Hey, you, get off of my cloud
Hey, you, get off of my cloud
Don't hang around 'cause two's a crowd
On my cloud baby

The telephone is ringin'
I say, "Hi, it's me, who is it there on the line?"
A voice says, "Hi, hello, how are you?
Well, I guess I'm doin' fine"

It's three a.m., there's too much noise
Don't you people ever wanna go to bed?
'Cause you feel so good
Do you have to drive me out of my head?

I said, Hey, you, get off of my cloud
Hey, you, get off of my cloud
Hey, you, get off of my cloud
Don't hang around 'cause two's a crowd
On my cloud baby

I was sick and tired, fed up with this
And decided to take a drive downtown
It was so very quiet and peaceful
There was nobody, not a soul around

I laid myself out
I was so tired and I started to dream
In the mornin' the parkin' tickets were just like a flag
Stuck on my windscreen

I said, Hey, you, get off of my cloud
Hey, you, get off of my cloud
Hey, you, get off of my cloud
Don't hang around 'cause two's a crowd
On my cloud

Hey, you, get off of my cloud
Hey, you, get off of my cloud
Hey, you, get off of my cloud
Don't hang around, baby two's a crowd
On my cloud

You can't feel my pain
You can't feel my torment
Driving me insane
I can't fight these feelings they will bring me pain
You can't take away
Make me whole again

SAVE ME -- Joan Armatrading

Sinking
Caught up in a whirling motion
Such a strange sensation
The current's uncertain
Like sails of a mill
I spin
Like wheels I move in a circle
While you stand on the bank
Immune or evasive
Throw me a lifeline
Save me...

Intimacy and affection
Frozen
In this game of chance
I forfeit
Full hand of love
With no counters
Like a moth
With no flame
To persuade me
Like blood in the rain
Running clear
While you stand on the inside
Looking in
Save me...

Inside looking in
Complete in yourself
Throw me a lifeline
Save me...

Stand on the bank
Immune or evasive
Throw me a lifeline
Save me...

Booyakasha, hon, how's your Portuguese?? Apologies in advance for posting yet another one not in English ... but this song has been stuck firmly in my head for days and days, and I think I've finally got all the lyrics down though I still don't quite understand them all (so I've probably got them wrong! gah!). Some of the comments on the YouTube video are making me wonder if it's a São Paulo slang analogous to Lunfardo of Montevideo & Buenos Aires. The upshot is that you kill me, your eyes have shot so many holes in my heart there's nowhere left to drill another one. Anyway, it's going round and round like a hamster wheel in my brain so maybe typing it out will help it to fade away. (I do like the song, at least it's not some advertising jingle or, like, Neil Diamond or something stuck in my head! :) )

TIRO AO ALVARO -- Elis Regina & Adoniran Barbosa

(do they spear-fish or something??)
Te olhar mata mais que atropelamento de automóvel,
mata mais que bala de revólver.

All your dreams are made
When you're chained to the mirror and the razorblade
Today's the day that all the world will see

Another sunny afternoon
Walking to the sound of my favorite tune
Tomorrow never knows what it doesn't know too soon

Need a little time to wake up
Need a little time to wake up, wake up
Need a little time to wake up
Need a little time to rest my mind
You know you should so I guess you might aswell!

What's the story, Morning Glory?
Well
Need a little time to wake up, wake up
Well!
What's the story, Morning Glory?
Well
Need a little time to wake up, wake up!

Rush-- Scars

I've stood upon my mountaintop
And shouted at the sky
Walked above the pavement
With my sense amplified
I get this feeling...

All my nerves are naked wires
Tender to the touch
Sometimes super-sensitive
But who can care too much?
I get this feeling...

Scars of pleasure
Scars of pain
Atmospheric changes
Make them sensitive again

Each emotional injury
Leaves behind its mark
Sometimes they come tumbling out
Like shadows in the dark
I get this feeling...

When I think about all I have seen
And all I'll never see
When I think about the people
Who have opened up to me
I get this feeling...

Snow falls deep around my house
And holds the winter light
I've heard the lions hunting
In the Serengeti night
I get this feeling...

Forests turned to factories
And river, sea, and sky
Hungry child in the desert
And the flies that cloud her eyes
I get this feeling...

Pleasure leaves a fingerprint
As surely as mortal pain
In memories they resonate
And echo back again...

Scars of pleasure
Scars of pain
Atmospheric changes
Make them sensitive again

"Reality" by The Berzerker

The uncreative juices flow from all but a selective few
and even those they tend to be wasted,
you have taken pride in a lifeform that you think you know
but what you do not know is it's rotting,
it is so unfortunate that this is how our world must be
but why must i accept reality, is this reality?
how can i exist amongst you people when i feel this way
when all that seems so wrong is everywhere,
A world without substance feeling so superior
i am discontent with lies and with ineffective lives,
should i grieve for mankind or live out my life
to be free of pain i'll want it back again,
so to be one with man i must be false to myself
any effort's futile for my life is just mine,
i have visions of worlds that are unparalleled
my attempts are in vain to walk this earth without shame,
for being human,
This is my reality and you do not have to accept it
you are only human with excuses and complaints,
couldn't you be something greater come on now you know the answer
you are so absorbed with your own pathetic lives,
why should i feel pity for you i don't think i know the answer,
have you ever thought about opening your closed eyes,
what is it that you're afraid of, don't you want to see yourself,
couldn't bear to see yourself as i see you.

Nat King Cole When I Fall In Love Lyrics
Songwriters: Heyman, Edward;Young, Victor

When I fall in love,
It will be forever
Or I'll never fall in love.
In a restless world like this is,
Love is ended before it's begun
And too many moonlight kisses
Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun.

When I give my heart,
It will be completely
Or I'll never give my heart.
And the moment I can feel that
You feel that way, too,
Is when I fall in love with you.

And the moment I can feel that
You feel that way, too,
Is when I fall in love with you.
