The fact that both the United States and Canada shares the Great Lakes, Great Plains, and Rocky Mountains sure shows how much Americans and Canadians are similar and can share many things together.

if only amuuurica and canada would get together in some form of official confederation which would enable cross-border travel and residence more easily than the present regime allows for.

IMO such a confederation would make no sense unless it also included Mexico, but then if you include Mexico, you also need to think about including Central America, Cuba, Haiti, the DR and all those other islands.

As for cross-border travel, there's the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative which allows for some sort of Enhanced ID card for residents of states and provinces on the border, to make border crossing easier. Don't you live in Washington?

the border lines [car traffic] are interminable. washington state not real-id compliant, so passports required. too hard to get, not worth the trouble AFAIC.

Apparently this sort of Enhanced ID is NOT the same as Real ID but it would not seem many folks are aware of it. One difference is that it can only be issued by states and provinces that are on the border. Beyond that I really don't know much and what I see on the WWW seems confusing, but as I don't live in a border state (I used to live in NY and sometimes wish I'd stayed) it's not a concern for me personally.

EDIT: also you do know that if the only sort of foreign travel you care about is to Canada, you can also get a Passport Card which is cheaper than a full-blown Passport.

both require the same kinda bureaucratic rigamarole, my sis applied for hers and didn't get her birth certificate back for over a year, congressional intervention required. that is a real risk, them losing your original copy [required] birth certificate.
