watch the live stream from times square @ 8:59PM PST, then when the ball drops, switch over the calendars, curse silently and gird myself for the horrors to come in the new year.

^ I used to watch Times Square sometimes, but I usually fall asleep now. I try to avoid midnight because I'm afraid of new years or the passage of time, much like you seem to be (it's foreboding).

listen to bad music or listen to machinery?

I have to confront the new year directly when it happens because if I wake up to it I may not wanna wake up.

machinery is better music than bad music IMHO. there are lots of surprisingly musical sounds in machinery. George Gershwin heard musical motifs in the subway's mechanical noises which he used in "rhapsody in blue."

same q.

Definitely machinery, so long as it's not really loud. I know this because my massage therapist used to play bad music (e.g., Chopin -- sorry but I can't stand Chopin) and when I asked him to shut it off he said it's covering machinery noise from nearby construction. The machinery noises were much better. At least they don't get stuck in my head!

Make turkey soup with the leftovers or ... not?
