...Okay, I now see you're referring to a hockey guy I'd never heard of. I thought you were referring to a 1950s-famous pop singer and golfer of that name whom I was under the impression was a True North.

Don't you live in Washington? I suspect that if you had the opportunity to live for a year in, say, New Brunswick you'd probably miss Washington. Also, aren't you old enough for Medicare (or soon to be?). I don't mean any disrespect, it's just not clear to me how much better off you'd be if you were to immigrate to Canada.

why would i miss washington? and personally i'd choose southern BC or perhaps NS. medicare [if the GD GOP doesn't financially exsanguinating it for its own benefit] is a long ways off. SS thankfully is a bit closer, same worries about the bloodsucking capitalists of the GOP absconding with its fundage as well. as a canadian i'd have much less fear of bankruptcy/lifetime financial ruin/penury. less fear of violent crime. less friction between myself and others who have a somewhat brutally atavistic mindset.

I don’t know of any requirements such as having 800k. There are different categories for immigrants, but the only category that might relate to the country you are emigrating from is the refugee program. There are family reunification programmes, but there are other options such as being a skilled worker.

the $800k is definitely one of the requirements along with key university-level skills [being a mechanic or a plumber/electrician is not enough, they're talking RN, dentist, doctor, lawyer, engineer, microsofty and the like]. these requirements were added in late 1981, previous to that, most americans were welcome up there. several thousand [approximate] americans were turned away at the border when they tried to enter for the last winter olympics up there, because they had things like speeding tickets on their record.

Take a look at Canada Immigration website. It wouldn’t let me copy a link. Things have changed a lot since 1981. Right now a person only needs to have about 13k Cdn to support themselves at time of immigration. Trade workers are sought after - construction, butchers, some farm workers.

Being turned away for DWI/DUI is a different thing. In Canada it is a criminal offense and stays on your record. A person can apply for a waiver “ministers permit”, for a fee and be allowed in.

What keeps, or kept, some people out was health. If you were disabled and not able to support yourself or you were to be an immediate “drain” on healthcare you were inadmissible. That has eased too.

hmmmm, last time i checked was a year ago. something tells me that there is a "demographic retirement crisis" happening up there now and they need more rank and file workers now. thank you for the heads-up :) even though as an aspie my chances are still poor.
