New Year's Day, because it's an isolated Bank Holiday (Public Holiday) in this country, whereas Christmas Day and Boxing Day form a two-day Bank Holiday, which I struggle to survive, especially considering that Christmas Eve is hardly a normal day either...

This coming Monday is another bloody UK Bank Holiday by the way.


'Mom and Pop Stores' ('Corner Shops' in the UK, I think) or Supermarkets?

tough choice, i have a mom and pop store [the "shop n' hop"] as well as a wallyworld in the little pregnant wide spot in the road which passes for my little town. the shop n' hop specializes in remaindered goods so it is cheaper, so that is where i go first.

Supermarkets offer far better value than smaller outlets in this country, especially since the arrival of Aldi and Lidl. They're also open for much longer hours these days (until about 10pm mostly), which makes shopping there a 'no brainer' in most cases.

Take a bus or a taxi?

bus is cheaper but taxi is more direct. neither available in my neck of the woods. i'd ride the bus a LOT more often if it were handier.

I can't muster any interest at all in American football. Rugby is a rubbish game as well, but I'll vote for it on the grounds that at least it's British.

Cricket or Horse Racing?

I've been very into both of these at different times of my life, interest is now much less, but I'd opt for horse racing. Cricket has become a bit of a pantomime event in some respects, with 20/20 games and so on.

Shares (stocks) or Cash Deposits?

shares, as they can appreciate in value, and also pay dividends.

You're right about shares, but I've been badly burnt so often (notably in 1987 and 2008) that I won't put more than about 10%-15% of my savings into them. I'm mostly in cash deposits, on which the interest, of course, doesn't match the real rate of inflation.
