Did the ancient Romans ski? I'm just trying to picture what they might have on their feet? Some sort of wooden skis perhaps?

I don't think so, the Caliga is a hybrid between a sandal and a boot, meant for warm weather.

Amazon.com? Or maybe ABE Books might have something.

Thanks Quatermass, ABE does have some Latvian textbooks. :)

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

How exactly does a steam-powered gun turret differentiate between friend and foe? I wasn't aware that boiled water could form allegiances.

*Throws an IFF tag onto Strapples, getting him hoist with his own petard, or, in this cases, blown up by his own rocket, which is pretty much the same thing.*

The operator has to make that judgment call.
If (s)he chooses poorly, (s)he may be court marshaled.

I was quoting Yahtzee, and he was whinging about automated gun turrets. In BioShock.

Then the computer programmer of the identification software
would be responsible, though it's merely a game you're talking about.

He was talking about a steampunk automated gun turret from the late 50's or early 60's. You don't need a programmer as much as a sodding plumber!

(Or, given the setting of the game in an underwater city, a sodden plumber, ha ha ha)

I ski my way into victory again (and don't make me explain how I steer my skis with four legs).

The donkey slid past the winners post missing it completely, unable to control his skis, so I take the winners podium.

I'd love to see the tree try and walk to the podium.
