Actually, the Book of Judges is the most pessimistic scripture in the whole Old Testament. It tells about the downward spiral of Israel. It's seldom quoted in Sunday schools.

I should hope not. If it's the most pessimistic of the OT books, it must be something.

I learned lots as a kid in Sunday School (all the more well known stories) but much was left well alone as being quite unsuitable for kids. I never look at the OT today.

There's timeless wisdom in the Proverbs. Suitable for believers and non-believers alike. Also, the Deuterocanonical books called Wisdom and Sirach (in Catholic Bibles) are quite on a par with the Proverbs.
