Wow, really? I was worried it might annoy others here that we didn't keep it to English.

I'm relieved someone liked it! :)

i like it also.

i was reading about noun classes and nominal morphology the other night, don't know why i delved into loanwords (blame the endless web of hyperlinks)

i wasn't exactly sure how to work around case and gender at the same time. i'll surely take a course on this when i start college next year, if they have any.

Yes really. Of course, languages are my special interest. I can't speak for others here.

One day Skilpadde, in about 100 years, I might be able to write to you in Norwegian. :)

Don't hold your breath though, Krabo is still waiting for more than a few words of Finnish.

relieved you liked it too, Kip!

I know all about hyperlinks... IDK how many times I end up way off from the subject I was reading because of those dang things...

I had that problem in German all the time the 2 years I struggled with it.

I hear ya. Likewise there can never be too much about turtles.

About 100 years from now, eh? That's a deal! I can't guarantee you that I'm not senile by then, but I will do my best :P

But seriously, it would be nice. You already know one word; my username. It's the most important word to know in any language IMHO.

Gasp! Now you're telling me?!

Poor Krabo... Image

Well, if you didn't already know how to subjugate night in Finnish, it's on the previous page.

^ for a long time Skilpadde, I though your username was just a name. It took ages before I worked out what it meant.

One question though, I'm never quite sure how to pronounce it. Is there any chance of you giving us a link to a youtube video to hear it pronounced, like you did with 'Oslo'? 8)

And....just for you:

Thank you! What a lovely pic! :D

When I first signed up Skilpadde was the only username I could think of that I wouldn't regret or tire of. I've been Skilpadde on at least 5 different forums (though only 2 still remain).

I?ve tried to find a video where the pronunciation was clear, but it was hard to find. This one isn?t too bad, except for the voice.

At the above points he says ?skilpaddene? (the turtles)

0:36
0:51

3:18
Skilpaddden (the turtle)

1:20 he finally says Skilpadde (turtle).

This one is clearer but he's speaking a dialect that makes him pronounce it a little different than we do in the south east.

These two are extremely childish and the speaker has an accent, but it?s clear:

First word out is ?hei?, which means the same but is pronounced differently than hey.

Huh. That's a new one.

I've also seen Skilpad, and Skipaddle

Sk is usually pronounced "sk" in Norwegian, but when followed by "i", it's pronounced like "she". The only exception I know is "skim" because it's not really a Norwegian word, it's just used (skimming as in copying your bank card). Also 'skj' and 'sj' = "sh".
Gj, and j and hj all equal the sound like y in yellow.

Speaking of special interests, guys... Which special interests do y'all have? Turtles have been mine for about 23 years, since I was about 14.

I never misread Skilpadde's name as Skilpad is the Afrikaans word for tortoise / turtle (skilpaaie is the plural). There's even a building on the Pretoria Showgrounds which was always named the Skilpadsaal (Tortoise or Turtle Hall) owing to its rounded roof.

Tortoises are the official symbol of the small South African town of Sedgefield.

there's a restaurant downtown i used to go to often, out front is a fountain with lots of skilpaaie. some people get rused into believing they're fake because they hardly move.

Wow, you dance?! I thought we all had two left feet...

I'm a bookworm (and a gamer and a movie fan) but I think I'm too particular to call any of them special interests rather than interests.

And a great a great symbol it is! :D

This reminds me... I am collecting words for turtle in different languages, so far I have:

Norwegian: skilpadder: turtles
Havskilpadde: sea turtle
Sumpskilpadde: terrapin, pond turtle or marsh turtle
landskilpadde: tortoise

Swedish:
Sköldpadda: turtle
Havssköldpaddor: sea turtles
Landsköldpaddor: tortoises
Kärrsköldpaddor or sumpsköldpaddor: terrapins, pond turtles or marsh turtles

Danish: skildpadde

German: Schildkröten

French: tortue

Spanish: Tortuga

Afrikaans: Skilpad (skilpaaie plural). (Thanks, Enviro! :D )

If anyone know any more words for turtle, can you please post them? :)

Not close at all. I was saying something close to Skill-pad-day. I know better now though. :)

I said I dance, I didn't say I dance well. Actually my coordination is ok. The thing that kills me is learning routines. Putting one thing after another in order just doesn't work for me. All the parts get jumbled up in my head. It takes me at least three times longer than anyone else to learn a routine. I have to get to the part where I have done it so many times that my body knows what to do, even when my brain has shut down.

Oh, and you wanted more turtle words.....

Italian : tartaruga acquatica ('tartaruga' is a tortoise - do you like those too?)
Finnish : merikilpikonna (tortoise is just kilpikonna). I had to look this one up, for some reason they don't teach 'turtle' at the beginning of my Finnish course. :P
