I have always thought that mittens are by definition hand-knitted.

A pair of those that Skilpadde posted would be in Finnish rukkaset, from the Russian word ruka, meaning 'hand'. A pair of what I posted would be in Finnish lapaset, and they are always made of wool. It seems to be the case that both are mittens in English.

By the way, mitten is vott in Norwegian, and mittens = votter.

Older Finns used to call them vanttu, and I think both languages are here borrowing from a common source.

You're right about that, most 'votter' are knitted.
But to me a 'vott' is mostly what we call 'polvott' here (I have no idea what it's called in English), which has a plastic alike 'shell' (often made from nylon) and the inside can be made of what we call saueskinnspels (sheep skin fur, not the same as regular wool), fleece like material or polyurethane foam.

We have a word called vanter in Norwegian. It means a hand cloth with room for each finger (unlike a vott). A vante is made out of textile, either sown, knitted or crochet, while a hanske (glove) has a shell that is usually made out of leather.

I've already posted a polvott. Here's a vott:

You are correct.

Gloves - have individual fingers
Mittens - one space for the thumb, one large space for the four fingers.

What they are made of does not change their name, although you can specify if you want; leather gloves, woolen mittens.

Kittens in mittens? 8O

Someone must alert Sylkat immediately!

On another note, if I tried to do that with my cat I would end up bloodied and scarred. :P

It would be interesting to know beforehand what exactly will be the last post in this thread. Now, if you knew it, would you avoid submitting a similar message, for example in the fear that soon after something terrible would happen?

Well, if this thread were to end because of something terrible happening to someone, it’d have to happen to Alex, so it’s him who’d be at the mercy of whoever decided to post the message known in advance to be the last one. Of course, Alex could thwart their evil plan by locking the thread.

I think we’re better off not knowing what will be the last post for the time being.

One of these unfathomable sidetracks. Can't remember how it started.
