Hokay, so a 'muffin' to me has always been a pretty basic circular item, very similar to a 'teacake', it's essentially bread, rather than any sort of sweet, fancy cake:

The things you describe as 'muffins' I would call 'buns' or maybe some sort of cupcakes. But I googled 'muffin', and most of the pictures that came up were of the sort you provided. So I don't know. American influence and terminology making its way into British English? Maybe I'm just behind the times.... :lol:
