After moving to France and not knowing much French I needed to buy some logs for the wood burning stove, so needed to know what to say at the local garage (that sells logs). I've had some very bizarre looks some times in stores. I once bought 16 small fencing posts from the DIY store and the woman at the checkout asked me how many I'd got. My mind blanked for a moment. Then I remembered that French worked by saying 10 plus X. So instead of saying Seize I said "J'ai Dix-six." This got me a very strange look - I think I'd told her that I'd died! Anyway she came round and counted them for herself.
