What is your first name? Ike is short for Isaac. About 90% of people misspell Isaac, although unlike other names for which people say "I get all kinds of spellings", Isaac is misspelled consistently incorrectly in just one way, Issac. Don't do that. There's one s and two a's in Isaac. They even misspell it immediately following having either read or having been told how to spell it correctly, I think largely because most people think they already know how to spell it.

Age: 32 - born Nov 5, 1974

Location: Austin TX currently - born and raised in Dallas, lived in Jacksonville, Orlando and Ft Lauderdale Florida and briefly here and in Charlottesville VA. If I had it my way I'd not have lived in so many places -- it's all been in the process of chasing programming jobs, working for companies that went out of business via dot-com syndrome or for people who fired me usually for reasons apparently related to AS.

Current perseverations: Severe depression ... illustration, writing... I'd like to get back to a place where computer programming is in this answer ... preferably sooner than later... and maybe after that roleplaying games, which I haven't been involved in for many years

When did you discover AS? A little over a month ago - not yet diagnosed. I have an appointment with the local MHMR office next Tuesday, the 21st.

Do you have other psych diagnoses? No.

Do you have a degree? God I wish.

Kids? 3 - they live with their mother in Dallas / Ft Worth

Favorite music, other than NIN  Fairly ecclectic in that regard. Lots of 80's "retro" music (a lot of one-hit wonders), Peter Gabriel, Mike and the Mechanics, the Cars, Jethro Tull, Cat Stevens -- I even like some of the newer grunge stuff although I like very little rap or country

Job? That's the big question now... I've been a computer programmer for the better part of a decade, mostly ColdFusion ... I really want to continue doing it ... I have some concerns it may not work out for me in spite of the fact that I've spoken at conferences, written articles for the ColdFusion Developer's Journal and been a volunteer member of Team Macromedia and later the Adobe Community Experts for a long while (several years).

Relationship with significant other, past or present? Married to my ex for 7 out of 9 yrs we were together. Legally separated although the divorce is still not finalized. Living with a significant other, Tiffany. We've been together almost 7 years.

Plans for the future? God I want to be able to say that I can plan for the future -- that's my biggest desire. It has been my biggest desire in the past 7 years since my wife and I split up in 2000-2001. Before that even, but worse since we split.

Anything else you feel is pertinent: I need help.

What is your first name?

Will you settle for "Chatbrat"? or "Nana"?

Age:

48

Location:

Texas

Current perseverations: ?

When did you discover AS?

A few years ago I heard about it, but it wasn't until this year that I read about it in detail. I do not have a dx of AS. I do want to get tested for it though because I think I either have it or NVLD or both.

Do you have other psych diagnoses?

Bipolar, Dysthymia, ADHD, Social Anxiety, Agoraphobia, Dissociation, OCD, PTSD, PMDD and umm I think that is all. Interestingly enough, when I got the Norplant birth control taken out of my arm, my mood swings went away. (Other than the PMDD mood swing stuff. You ladies know what I mean, lol) So the bipolar dx is kinda up in the air. I haven't taken anything other than antidepressants off and on the last 6 years and I've been fine. I currently do not take any psyche meds.

Do you have a degree?

Nope. I went to college in my 30's but didn't finish. I wanted to get a degree in social work or criminal justice.

Kids?

2 boys ages 27 and 22 and 1 girl aged 11. But as she would tell you, she's 11 and 3/4ths! ; )

Favorite music, other than NIN Laughing.

I love the rock from the 60's and 70's. I don't care much for the 80's, save for a few rock songs that still had the 60's/70's influence. I also love Celtic music and bluegrass and the blues.

Job? No : (

Relationship with significant other, past or present?

I'm happily married (finally, after too many tries! lol.) I met my husband on the internet back in 1998 and we got married in June of 1999. We have both been diagnosed as Bipolar but I think our symptoms of depression and meltdowns when we're overstimulated and/ or stressed out, and social anxiety, is actually AS. My husband has like 3 or 4 first cousins with Autism!

Plans for the future?

To survive my youngest child's hormonal adolescence! *sigh* I'd like to open a flea market or thrift store one day, too. And when my husband retires, I'd love to travel the US in an RV.

P.S. I also have 2 grandkids but have only seen one of them. Long story. I have a beautiful granddaughter somewhere out there in the world who will be 3 this December..... and I have a beautiful grandson who is 17 months old and is just as precious as can be! I am "Nana" and my husband is "Papa."

Age: 26

Current perseverations: counting "1,2,3,4", "feminist" theory, noticing palindromes (mainly in numbers)

When did you discover AS? About a year ago but thought about it flippantly until about one month ago.

Do you have other psych diagnoses? Was diagnosed with Social Phobia about 5 years ago. After learning about AS it seems like any social anxiety is bi-product of AS stress.

Do you have a degree? No. 4 years of Fine Art History/Arch. Theory and Crit. but left due to social anxiety. Had trouble attending and participating in class.

Kids? No.

Favorite music, other than NIN  Eclectic, I put more emphasis on what's said than genre. Classical is usually good all over. My current playlist is: Brandi Carlile (Country), Feist (Canadian), Heartless Bastards (Rock), The Free Press (Canadian), Robert Stalman (Classical), Jenny Owen Youngs (Chick Rock?).

Job? Kinda. Work freelance and run a small business.

Relationship with significant other, past or present? No. Tend to push people away when it starts to count :( .

Plans for the future? Turn Small Business into a life-supporting business - bootstrap time :D

Same happened to me. It was a few years ago when Bi-polar was a "popular" diagnosis. I described depression, meltdowns and flapping etc. when overstimulated and my family doc said I was Bipolar. I said he was Nuts and switched to a doctor in the city. I wonder if this is a common mis-diagnosis?

That's truly inspiring. Your students will be lucky. Having AS probably means you'll be a lot more accepting and open of differences.

I temporarily volunteered with a special ed class once and had a feud with the teacher because she constantly patronized the children. When I brought it up she said they didn't notice, i could have decked her.

Roland

28

Taupo, NZ

Unsure about perseverations, I do stim by playing Computer games (simulations), but can say "enough" and walk away.

My father met someone who's son has AS. His similarity to me (behaviour) when I was his age was uncanny and striking. So my father brought up the subject of AS, and after many years of false-negatives, I got a proper (positive) diagnosis in September 2007.

Depression and Anxiety, predominantly social.

Diploma, Office Administration. National Certificate, Business Computers.

No Kids. Probably won't have any.

Tangerine Dream, Salmonella Dub, Fat Freddy's Drop, The Black Seeds.

Seeking Employment.

28 year old Virgin! No relationships.

Proper long term work, then look at moving to a bigger city with more oppurtunities. Joining a shared-interest club and making friends, I also want to have a lasting relationship but for now I'd just like to experience sex, maybe once or twice will be enough.

Thank You.

What is your first name? Kyle.

Age: 21 years.

Location: Western Massachusetts, United States.

Perseverations:

  1. Frugivory.
  2. People with a few very specific appearances. All other people I find repulsive. It's a real feat of assholism, but I can't seem to change it.
  3. Sex.
  4. PC games with very specific design philosophies.
  5. Exploring the way I think.
I do nothing that isn't related to these -- even without invoking Freudian philosophy.

When did you discover AS? I was diagnosed around the age of 10 years and was not happy about it. I have more lately warmed to it for all it has done for me.

Do you have other psych diagnoses? No. I have a few physical abnormalities that interact with the AS a bit, but I suppose that is not the question.

Do you have a degree? No, I left school fairly early and studied on my own for several years. When I returned to the school system at 14, they suggested I take college courses for half the day, which I did, but I was only interested in two of the courses (Philosophy of Science and Philosophy of Religion). I finished them yet never returned simply because, in my mind, there was nothing more to do. There was a college which personally approached me, and their courses actually did interest me, but I hadn't the money nor the mathematical ability for it.

Kids? I keep plants. I care for them like children. Then I eat pieces of them while they still live.

Favourite Music: Any piano sonata, but also Acoustic Alchemy, Amber Asylum, Amethystium, Cirque du Soleil, Dead Can Dance, Eithne ni Bhraonain (a.k.a. Enya), Jon Hallur, Josh Groban, Lacuna Coil, Loreena McKennitt, Nightwish, Philip Glass, Regina Spektor, Todd Masten, and Within Temptation. I also occasionally have a craving for Annie Lennox or the Beatles, but most of the time I find them a little too... dry, or something to that effect.

Job? Yes, please.

Relationship with significant other, past or present? For some reason a female actually did attach herself to me, and we have been addicted to each other for eight years. Psychiatric aid is being sought.

Plans for the future? I have been considering eternal life.

What is your first name? Christine, but I prefer alei

Age: 30

Location: Barrie, Ontario, Canada

Current perseverations: Psychology, philosphy, writing, S&M.

When did you discover AS? I finally became concrete in my head about a week ago, but I have thought about it since a friends son was diagnosed

Do you have other psych diagnoses? Depression. Anxiety disorder, social phobia, and OCD are all terms that have been tossed around as well, but I have the sneaking suspicion those are symptoms of the aspergers and the way I have been coping with it for 30 years.

Do you have a degree? No, University is expensive. Consider me self taught.

Kids? one daughter, she's 12

Favorite music, other than NIN? Puscifer, Sarah Mclachlin, Tool, a whole host of other assorted genre's. I have expansive tastes and my life has a soundtrack.

Job? Is staying sane a job? How about motherhood? I have been out of the workforce trying to figure out why I couldnt function normally on the job. My perfectionism and inability to socialize well tends to create hard feelings. I'm looking forward to finding out what I need in order to start working again.

Relationship with significant other, past or present? I have an NT boyfriend who loves me for exactly who I am, moments of craziness and all.

Plans for the future? I would like to open a bakery at some point. I am working on a business plan for a small company that caters meetings and short events that dont call for a full meal. I also do themed party tables as an alternative to just having a cake.

Anything else you feel is pertinent: Right now I'm frightened and confused and I dont really know what to make of all this.
