The whole tinnitus thing. I'm thinking about this.

I've already commented on Aspies using generalised areas of the brain rather than specialised bits. I choose to construe that as us reclaiming whole swathes of space that has been devoted to obsolescent functions. Who needs "social" as a permanent area - we just do it when we need to. We don't always get it spot on, and it's a bit tiring, but we generally get by.

Now, I also occasionally suffer from scotoma, an aspect of migrainous aura. I don't seem to get the migrain itself at all. If you've not come across it, scotoma is either negative or positive.

Negative scotoma is where patches of the visual field cease to exist - they're not blurred, dark or light - just not there. I get this sometimes. More often than I can remember, because I literally am not aware of the missing patch. I only notice that it's missing if I am obliged to "look" there.

Positive scotoma has strange patterns of various sorts appearing. One common type is described as "castellated". However, artists impressions I've seen show it as a diagonal sort of pattern, i.e not so much _!"!_!"!_|"!_ as \/X\/V\//\/. That's what I also see.

Now... being a mathematician and also having written the programs for body scanner image reconstruction (tomography), sonar analysis, and a bunch of other stuff, I think I recognise the pattern (that I personally see) as an intermediate image processing stage. I.e. my brain is directly perceiving sections of the image which have yet to be completely interpreted into "recognised image".

In both case, maybe without directly intending to, I am "borrowing" a chunk of visual cortex for some other use.

Back to tinnitus. To my mind, what I hear again sounds like incompletely filtered noise. I'm quite willing to believe that what I "hear" is mainly thermal noise effects in my cochlea. Normally, my brain industriously allocates a lot of processing power to removing this from my sound perception. Again, I wonder if I'm using that part of my brain for general purpose thought. I don't really "mind" hearing the "noise".

I'm this instant doing my listening to techno while tapping fingers and feet, and a bit of swaying/rocking thrown in - while trying to decide why I'm employing all that. I think it might serve to actually organise my thoughts, by shaking them about, until they settle into the pattern that is "the answer".

In fact, most of the things I'm doing serve to present my senses with gross and repetitive inputs, which means they are not going to be distracted by background, unexpected small interferences (like the car I just heard pass my window, during the gap between tracks... must edit out the track gaps!).

Stick that in your pipes and smoke it! :)

I have tinnitus, as well. Sometimes its a deep ringing, but mostly it sounds like radio static. Since I've taken to wearing earplugs at night, I get to hear all the variations up close. :x

it makes me think of the way i memorize things: i'm always (partly deliberatly partly unconciously) forgetting a lot of stuff that can be checked somewhere, like just names or things, to be able to focus on the mechanisms i really need to understand a concept. it means i have a lot of difficulties reproducing certain facts, and quite easy to understand just about anything even if i don't know the meaning of every single word. also when i'm learning new things i first need to know what it is for, so that i can 'load' the appropriate system to use, as you say not always in position the very second you need it.
about aspies and social things, i believe we are too good at socializing and that this makes us suspicious, people feel uncomfortable with a concious mind that cannot be turned of except with extreme means (like a considerable amount of alcohol)

i've had some blank spots sometimes, very rare, don't know anything about it though
hm, i'm talking, scary ...

Oh yes! I think that's really what I mean, in a way. We do it all consciously, purposefully, (when we manage/bother to) which probably terrifies someone who can't control it.

Yep. Had them. Oddly, reports afterwards seem to indicate the people around me can't see much of a transition.

Not just scary, I hope. It also feels good?

I know it does for me. I'm progressively trying to rid myself of all the masks, costumes, mirrors, stealth technology I've built up over the years. I haven't a clue where I'm going, but it's going to be fun.

To Postpaleo and cosmiccat,

I'm glad you liked the newsletter, glitches and all. :D

Postpaleo, I make stuff using the Publisher part of MS Office Suite, and save it in a PNG or JPG format via Paint Shop Pro, which is a great alternative to Photoshop ($$$$). I'd prefer to use PSP's own PSP file extension, as it makes a much cleaner image, but Photobucket doesn't recognize it. Anyway, if you'd like more info, you can PM me, and I can give pointers, or whatever. It's not difficult, as long as your brain wants to function. Mine wasn't very cooperative last night.

Thanks, was in the process of getting a copy of Photoshop and wondered if it was over kill. Got PSP on instead. I don't run the full Office suite, so see what PSP can do, by itself. Looks like a learning curve to it and the little I used it, just poking buttons, gave me an out of memoery error. This machine runs 2gigs, not good, but my other one runs 4 so maybe it'll be fine. Thanks again.

i just said that to give me an attitude, don't have real difficulties talking, certainly not at wp,
(although i'm not a talkative person in general, my children: "hey mum, tell us something", "mu-um you didn't respond to what i just said"...)

i'm a little too theatrical to wear real masks, it always shows, i use a set of selfmade 'rules'.
here at wp i never felt the urge to hide myself, amazed at how open and honest i can be here, it's really nice and surprisingly interesting
(real life often bores me, although i can say i have the best possible life, a crazy and rather enjoyable one, but well, you know so many unnecessary boring stuff sometimes)

HELL NO!

are they KIDDING ME?? Let me tell you (oh! I am getting excited and hot under the collar about this! who knew??) you hit and bully and withhold love from a kid enough you can get her to quit behaviours you don't like, you beat her with a belt or a paddle or a coat hanger enough you will gain a control over any sort of behaviour you want to stop! You will stop them for the rest of their lives, and create a human being that will roll over for anyone or any thing that approaches them in an antagonistic or authoritarian manner. oh, yes you can!

ZanneMarie wrote:

yes, she understood consequences at the level I could understand consequences. She bit a neighborhood child when she was teased unmercifully, (actually there were several of the children in the neighborhood there, but this child was the only one she caught!) and she was busted across her mouth and lost her budding adult front tooth. She was hooked into her too small child harness and paraded around the neighborhood so the kids could throw mud and stick and even stones at her by her folks to "atone" for being a 'biter!"

even in Jr High she heard the chant "Biter! Biter!, Biter" follow her down the halls by children hoping to see the fire works again. When she saw "The Color Purple" she so related to Oprah Winfrey's character that was so proud, then was beaten senseless. . .oh, the humanity!

ok
ok, I am less excited now. I think I am ok again. yeah. I will forget it all again. ok

move on about your business. . nothing to see here. . .

well, she could have used a FEW of the ninny feel good practices, I have to admit.
