Why children do things that can harm their life or health?
I am Polish.
What teens every year I went to a sanatorium that Americans and Brits could be called a summer camp
It was a special summer camp for teens with ADHD, Asperger syndrome, neuroses, and other such problems.
I became friends with a guy with ADHD, you might say that we were like Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, but that I was Mr. Spock in this duet.
My colleague from the camp told me stories of what happened to him in the past, disturbed in the course of the lesson, the teacher called her mother. The punishment was under house arrest, he lived on the 2nd floor of an apartment block typical socialist realist in my country which is full, I just like living in the ground floor. His friends wanted to persuade him to go with them, but it was locked, his mother went to work. He could not get out the door to go out the window decided on the third floor, he wanted to use the lightning attached to the gutter, he was skinny but lightning and so could not take his weight, and he fell to the ground and broke his arm and both legs. Insurance would not pay compensation because he contributed to the accident, and his mother had to pay for a new lightning protection. But I never got any more as a punishment of house arrest.
We had time than 13 years old. I've never done dangerous things. But I wonder why kids do things like that. Sorry for my english:-)
I don't think most people set out to do things that will hurt them. Rather, they decide to do something that has a high risk of them being hurt, and they take that risk because the risky activity will get them something that they want if they succeed. Children and teens are more prone to this sort of thing because they're not as good as adults at assessing the potential risks of a situation.
If your friend had ADHD he probably had some impulse control problems too.

Many people -- not just teens -- have difficulties thinking ahead. All you have to do is look at the gigantic hole in the ozone layer to see that a lack of foresight is pretty much universal.
We all have different values -- some people see the future as important, while others don't. It's what people see as important that influences their decisions. People who see "now" as more important than "the future" may not consider the potential consequences of their actions because it's not important to them. As long as they're not hurting others, it's really more a matter of a different style of living than it is a matter of right and wrong. --Though if they are loved ones, we may worry (and rightly so) if their lack of foresight ends up hurting them.
In the case of younger people, it could be some of the following things: (I'm not judging, these are just some theories)
- It's part of their personality and who they are to be impulsive and act without thinking first -- either because of a mental illness or a personality difference.
- They aren't experienced in life enough to know how to think ahead.
- They know they should think ahead but are too inexperienced to know what they should think ahead about.
- They have low self-esteem and so they don't value themselves or care hat happens to them.
- They do try to think ahead but make a mistake or error of judgment so it seems like they didn't think ahead.
These are only some of the possible reasons. When people are young, it's hard to know what to consider because you don't know how dangerous the world is yet. Children may take candy from strangers not knowing some awful adult may try to kidnap them or poison the candy -- they're just too innocent to know. Teenagers may try to think ahead but not have enough experience to know what things to consider. As we get older, and IF we are the kind of person who does think ahead, we will be more efficient at thinking ahead than when we were younger because we've learned from life experience and ours and others' mistakes. Still, no one can predict the future, so all of us will make some mistakes when trying to prepare for the future -- even if we try very hard to take everything into consideration.

Indeed, children are doing strange things, for example, though I did not do dangerous things, it could cause trouble to my parents, for example, shoe polish painted on the toilet, trying to run the emergency brake on the train I wanted, I wanted to see how it works, or how I was a kid and I was with my mother in a department store screamed "Mommy is it in the shop will steal" even though my family was never poor, no one knew Than that I have Asperger's syndrome. As a teenager I was a good boy. Every year I would go to the summer camp, which I described earlier, during one visit I became friends with this boy that had ADHD, he told me the story of his having been grounded , I've never been grounded in fact my mom forced me to go out somewhere, to the park or shopping
That's why I was surprised as you leave the house through the window and not as civilized man through the door
As for my friend from camp, hes mom decided that she never ground him, because is to dangerous and she need to develop other form of punishment

I smacked a ladys bottom in a fruit n veg shop when i was younger and she fell into the tray. Didnt even think about it at the time.
Later, my sister dropped a teddy bear on the road as we were crossing and i ran into the traffic to collect it for her. I was 7.
You dont consider the consequences. Impulsivity? Who knows. I knew back then i was invincible
Im still here today as living proof ![]()
