Nerds, in the traditional sense, were too ostracized to "make a difference", and they didn't try and pretend to be someone they're not. If you really are an outcast, you can't rally the troops. The quiet ones who work on their computer circuits, or play their guitars, those are the traditional nerds, not these posers who act like they are above it all, but still go to parties and get drunk as if there is a bright red line separating them from the evil jocks, or anyone else who isn't just like them. So it's not the nerds, it's the posers. Unfortunately, there are so many of these idiots running around that nerds as a group get labeled as smug. Nerds aren't smug. Smug nerds are smug. It's not that I'm a huge fan of nerds, or that I am a nerd, I just HATE HIPSTERS.
its sort of a stage in life now for most urbanites, it's disgusting, these unemployed do-nothings who are subsidized by their parents or their arts are self-congratulating morally superior to everyone else. For many, it is a transformative, somewhat religious experience. Because you own a mac and can operate illustrator to make album cover art or movie-editing software to showcase your perspective to the world does not make you a nerd! Your Vegan! You drive a bicycle with a reusable eco-friendly grocery bag to the local whole foods... Your cool... We get it!
That's the thing. A hipster is a pseudo-nerd. You know how there are real alpha males and fake alpha males? Well, with the increase in nerds, and acceptance of nerds, of course there are now going to be fake nerds. At least the fake alpha males had some indication of testicular fortitude. I'd rather have a poor imitation of supposed aggression than a poor imitation of supposed passivity.

No one cares about Mods anymore. The sixties are over.

Nerds are not a hated people in general. They are at most envied as people for their intelligence and resulting wealth.

I live in America and grew up here and am curious to know if Europeans in socialist countries show similar views towards nerds as Americans do?
I once heard that nerds are treated as rock stars in Europe, so I'm curious to know how true that statement really is
I'm Italian, that's not a socialist contry, but its culture is unique and difficult to be explained. As a nerd I had good experiences with my peers, because I did their classwork and they were my friends, and bad experience later, because in high school competition was stronger and they would be just better than me, but they almost never succeeded. If they asked me to do their classwork, I would do it, but they preferred to compete. I was sad for this situation.
I often found them boring and I wasn't too interested to their friendship.
When I started university, I had good experiences again. I didn't speak about my accademic successes as I don't speak about my professional successes because if someone wants to be my friend, I prefer he likes Claudia and not her successes or failures.
In Italy it's not polite to speak too much about your successes or your IQ (I don't even know my IQ) unless you're asked to do it.
I'm the type of nerd that likes to learn and I didn't care so much to get A's. I studied on my own and often i read books that where not about the same topic I had to study for school purposes.
No, no one trated me as a rockstar...
Ireland here:
I can only go on what I see on TV for comparison but there seems to be a hatred of intelligence by some in the US. And a Lot of bulling. In Ireland people don't like boring people much whether they are athletic or good looking and the love interesting, crazy, eccentric, funny people. If your can play an instrument, sing, tell a story or are funny you in. Otherwise you're more tolerated. Certain forms of education were illegal while the Neighbors "visited" so we might have a different attitude to it. But I haven't even as an aspie seen the levels of abuse nerds receive elsewhere.
Lawl, exactly. Terrorists a close second after paedophiles I think. Terrorists capture the imagination of NTs by giving people an enemy to shoot who has no sense of remorse. With paedophiles it's just a case of gut-wrenching uncivility that makes people's eyes go red with fury.
