I came off feeling that many of the characters' symptoms were exaggerated stereotypes/caricatures and/or drew attention to themselves for the sake of portraying the more extreme cases which left me feeling they didn't do much better at showing the wide range of people with Asperger's any more than Rain Man did to those on the wider autistic spectrum.

Agreed.

I found myself watching the movies thinking, "I can't relate to this" and wondering Holy Sh*t, maybe I don't have AS after all and maybe my kids don't have PDD either(!)
I could not relate to much of it, but I thought that was poor filmmaking, not something about my diagnosis.

I did love Mary and Max despite this, but did not feel like I could relate except in the remotest sense.
I did not like this story and could not relate to it in any way.

what I really miss is a good comedy with _realistic_ and _relatable_ Aspie characters, whose personality is not a mere sum of diagnostic criteria.

(Granted, it's far better than Rainman)!

It's a good depiction of the severe end of HFA. That used to be the only type of "mild" autism recognized back in the day.

I love Mozart and the Whale, as well as I love Rain Man.

I've seen "Mozart and the Whale" and really liked it. I don't know how "accurate" it is, since I haven't met many aspies in real life. My favourite scene was when Donald asks "WHEN?"

I cracked up laughing as soon as he said that (before "when should I call you?"), because I could totally imagine myself saying that.
