It is not just about making a great speech. It is acting all day every day, small talk and BS all day every day, reading other people all day every day, lights all day every day, grubby food every day. It would be a lot better once the person wins an election, but I seriously doubt an person on the spectrum could make through 2+ years of campaigning. In reality a lot of times it is the "wonks" in the background that are actually running things.

Apparently Hitler was autistic and he was great at winning elections. Unfortunately he was a psychopath as well.

Other politics people were thought to have been too, like Thomas Jefferson, and an English politician whom I can't recall right now.

These are all argued by Michael Fitzgerald.

It is hard enough diagnosing adults that are alive so I do not have much faith in claims that dead people were on the spectrum.

You can be autistic and give great speeches. Speeches are highly scripted events. Hitler and Jefferson did not have anything resembling the grind of 21st century American presidential elections.

Hitler was autistic? I am sorry to repeat myself almost verbatim... BUT, we cannot diagnose a dead person... period.

I address that HERE... So... unless you have a time machine, please refrain from statements like that

This is the (end of the) era of capitalism. Politics is an old worn out game that most people have never really liked or understood.
If you want real power, do what some autistic people are already doing, build a huge company that focuses on extremely specific things, and employ the most interested obsessed (autistic) people to run each one.
Just look at google for inspiration. There are plenty more groups out there, all of which have shaped the world much more than anyone in politics.

I'd work at my obsessions as a profession for free, if only someone would take care of my health challenges, which no one has.

Oh, and about whether someone with Asperger's could win an election? They would probably be able to win somehow, but people are born and bred for politics these days, they would just get assassinated or their policies would be ignored or tied up in the system. I've studied many of the secret inner mechanisms of politics. I think it'd be better to create an overpowering outside influence rather than pushing for reform from the inside. Also, there's an order to the system that must be followed, such as being mayor, then slowly "going up the ladder" to higher offices and creating a "track record" over the course of 50 years! Good luck with that!

We will have another one in the future, that I have no doubt.
Why?
I believe we are in a transitional time where there will be major changes.
Looking to the past Maximilien Robespierre I suspect was an aspie who played an important role in the French Revolution.

(yes, I cut and pasted that... and I will continue to do so EVERY time someone tries to diagnose someone long dead. )

you certainly can not diagnos a dead person with autism spectrum disorder in the clinical sense.but you can identify a idiot savant personality in someone if you have enough information on them

I don't think it would be possible. Someone with ASD, would have to be so high functioning to be a successful politician, that if they pulled it off, I would seriously start to doubt their diagnosis.

Though I suppose it might be possible for an autistic person to get elected to the city counsel of a smaller town, or maybe get elected to the board of directors of a local transit district or something. The type of low-key part time elected positions, that no one else is really interested in. Even then I don't think their political career would advance past that.

Yes... you can... but Autism, Asperger's and Savant syndromes do not go hand in hand, contrary to popular belief.

Hitler was not autistic. He was a psychopath period. He was way too manipulative and charming plus a social chameleon. Stop confusing narcissism and psychopath with autism. Too many people self diagnose on the "lacks empathy" criteria which is not the same lack of empathy psychopaths have.

I hope you don't think Charles Manson was autistic too

I think some people like to confine people within a diagnosis as if being autistic means you cannot succeed period. Sounds like the crab in a bucket routine. I love the self defeating question "Would we want them to?"

Comes across as condescending. There are plenty of musicians and actors/actresses who have aspergers. They don't allow that to stop them so who is everyone else to sit there and claim if you do something above and beyond this stereotype, you are going to be doubted.

So having aspergers means you are supposed to be put inside of a box forever and you aren't allowed to rise above it or get out. Nice.

If that's how you feel about yourself, try something new and get out of the box. Do something out of character and feel free.

Now to add onto this topic!

I don't care if a president has aspergers, what race they are or gender.

Aspies can be jerks too. I'd find it more refreshing to not have a narcissist or war mongering psychopath. Women can be that, someone of any race can be like that. I'm more focused on the content of character and if there were someone with aspergers running, that person would be alot like Ron Paul so no matter how much money the person raises, the media and everyone would make sure that person did not win.

Unfortunately, you cannot diagnose psychopathy in a dead person any more than you can an autism spectrum disorder

I plan to one day run for local office, the New York State Assembly (a legislative body that has a grandmother of a kid with Asperger's) and several advocates (albeit minor)) and my political goal, Lieutenant Governor of New York. Robert Duffy, the current title holder is as plain a guy you can get: a former cop, paid his dues and is now the sixth most powerful politician in New York (or even lower by some standards, as the state legislative leaders are really powerful, not to mention our US Senators).

I love politics, even with the fact that I take things personally.

But my political ambitions stop short of Washington DC.

I had previously speculated that Maximilien Robespierre could have been on the spectrum. Another one could be Oliver Cromwell.
"Subtlety may deceive you; integrity never will." Oliver Cromwell

Today one could satirically argue with modern spin doctors almost anyone heck anything could get voted in. With proper spin and manufactured consent the annoying orange could win an election.

Robespierre and Cromwell had many similarities. They played a key role in societal transition from old, perceived as corrupt, governmental forms.

With this in mind what does it mean when society truly calls for an aspie?
