Aspie teen has unique approach to his bullies
Obviously this was a pretty serious crime, but I can't help but think about a documentary I watched last night called "Kids for Cash" about kids who were sent to detention centres for relatively minor, non-violent crimes (mainly - one of them was a tiff) and how most of their lives were utterly ruined.
Kids just don't have the same powers of reason and critical judgment that adults, do.
Gavin's wounds will heal, but what he's gained from generosity of spirit and what how he's benefitted the community as a whole as an example of mercy (but not unaccountability) will benefit many, many more people than sending his assailants to a juvenile facility. America jails far too many young people for trivial offenses (I'm not saying this was a trivial offense) and their lives are utterly wrecked as a result. I think more 'alternative justice', more creative justice like this is for the good. Much better to be forced to reflect and to serve the community than to be locked away. And if you do it again... well, there's always a way to escalate punishment.

When my brother was in high school, a police officer wanted to put a criminal record on my brother for something his friends did but he was there when they did it but he didn't do it but they did. His friends threw smoke bombs out the window of the pick up truck my brother was diving and all his friends were in the back seat doing it. But my mom told the officer that he will not do that to her son. I had no idea that was a crime either but I thought it was a dumb thing they did and how could my brother have let it happen, I would have just pulled over and kicked them out or refuse to drive. But maybe he didn't know they were doing it because he was watching the road. My parents wouldn't know I was throwing food out the window as a child so I could watch it fly. Instead I had to be tattled on for my them to know.

You people are comparing this incident to misdemeanors and juvenile pranks. These thugs did something serious; and Yes, they should sit back and 'reflect' on what they did. In the can. If you are lenient on things like this, they will happen more frequently. If you are tough on these things, they will happen less frequently. Right now, these punks have been told that there is no accountability for their actions. Great life lesson. I'm sure that they will go far with what they learned here and that they will be a benefit to society.

America, the great freedom loving nation has locked up 1% of it's citizens
90% of then have been black or hispanic
I won't mention how many blacks and hispanics have been slaughtered in wars started by America
because apparently white Americans can't count and don't care!

... when you hold fast to a culture of revenge fantansies...
... how can you suggest that the penal system is rehabilitave?
...and if you are certain that the penal system is rehabilitative
...how can you support a system that applies the death penalty!

I've encountered many bullies growing up, and I knew that I would not stand a chance in a physical confrontation with any of them as I was a skinny, uncoordinated, weak kid meaning I had to learn quick to disarm them with words in order to survive. I would manipulate them into becoming my best friend, effectively disarming them one by one, and then gradually fade out of their lives until they forgot about me. I have been able to avoid ever having to fight even once by doing this.
While I found this approach easy to make these pseudo friends, I struggled throughout my life to make any real friends.
