Michael Specter: The danger of science denial

Quote:
About this talk:

Vaccine-autism claims, "Frankenfood" bans, the herbal cure craze: All point to the public's growing fear (and, often, outright denial) of science and reason, says Michael Specter. He warns the trend spells disaster for human progress.

Scientists know that mankind may not exist forever.

Zing.

Science is a fraud. The technology religion.

Science developed Tetra Ethel Lead for gas, and poisoned the whole nation.

Science also produced Dioxen, DDT, and guys in white coats talking about how safe it was.

Most American food cannot be sold in Europe, they have pure food laws.

Petro chemical waste products become food additives, and science backs it.

New drugs are approved due to science, and then the real testing begins on millions. Thialimide?

Both points of view have some validity. I got things like pneumonia and strep as a kid. I would probably not have lived to be ten without modern medicine. Handwriting issues would have made me a mediocre student and kept me from doing well on AP exams. Because of computers, and my aspergian memory, I am sleeping in while my classmates get up early to go to AP review sessions. On the other hand, science and technology have wrecked havoc on the environment, created terrible weapons, and made the existence of Twitter possible.
