Not very many people truly know what Asperger's is.
I had so many friends who probably had Asperger's who didn't know what it was when I said I have it. It's also hard to explain what Asperger's is because even though I'm not even mentally ret*d, since I HAVE to say Asperger's=Autism, the first thing to pop into people's heads is that I'm ret*d but don't show it. There are so many people at my school with "Asperger's" but obviously aren't, they're just High Functioning. Just because they talk doesn't mean they can't spend five minutes without saying something socially unacceptable/disturbing. I know people with High Functioning Autism that DON'T so maybe the people at my school are even LOWER functioning (?) A lot of people THINK most of Autistic/Aspie kids are like the bad kids at my school, so that's probably why all the GOOD kids aren't diagnosed. Or at least why MOST aren't. (I'm talking about morally good or morally bad, NOT how normal they act) It took me 12 years to get Diagnosed because of this fact (I've only been Diagnosed for a year) even though I OBVIOUSLY wasn't NT. What do you guys think?

Hmmm...interesting. Shows what you know about Aspies, doesn't it rofl?
"One pill makes you larger and one pill makes you small but the pills that mother gives you don't do anything at all"
Lot of people think Asperger's is all about being socially awkward and not fitting in or just saying rude things and being an ass.
Then there are some that think aspies never get married or never have jobs or have any friends and if you have one of these or more, you don't have AS. Some people take the criteria way too literal.
Then there are some that confuse AS and autism so instead of thinking autism autism, they are thinking AS.
Then of course there are people think think AS is mental retardation.
Actually PDD NOS is something very few people know about. It hard having to explain what PDD NOS is and it's on the autism spectrum. More people know what aspergers is even doctors know. But with PDD NOS doctor don't know what it unless they understand the autism spectrum. Am kind of glad they are gruuping every one into one giant autism spectrum. I think we will be more united if we only have one name. And we won't have all the confusing about having to explain to others about different semi danoges. And if we want to change what people think about autism we should thech them to have a better understanding
Judging from what you wrote here it seems you don't truely understand either.

I don't get it. It makes a lot of sense to me. Even PDD - NOS. I suppose I go to this forum everyday.
I think because of shows like Parenthood people think we're all rude and cold, and even before that. Or people think we're all geniuses. I get told I'm a genius even though I know it's not true. People can't help stereotype.
The whole ret*d thing, well, that discounts Asperger's. All you have to do is say that a person can't have Asperger's and be ret*d.

I agree with everything that was said in this thread.
ESPECIALLY, the whole thing with people confusing AS with the r word.
It really gets under my skin when people call me the r word, and for the younger people here, still in school (Those who get called the R word), it doesn't stop there, I stupidly thought it did, boy I was wrong.
people will think you're ret*d @ work and whenever you socialize to a stranger, if you make the slightest mistake you're a ret*d.
That alone has ruined my life, It doesn't help that I have another life altering medical condition on top of AS.
I can see why some people with AS are rude and cold, and I don't blame them, a lot aspies are treated like crap by society, especially the ones that talk funny. ![]()
