The Autistic Self Advocacy Network is proud to announce "Welcome to the Autistic Community", educational books which were co-written by ASAN's communications team and the Autism NOW center and illustrated by Anabelle Listic:

"Welcome to the Autistic Community" introduces newly-diagnosed Autistic people to the community and answers common questions they might have, covering topics such as legal rights and identity.

"Welcome to the Autistic Community" is currently available in English. It can be found on the ASAN website in two versions -

* “Adolescent,” written at a sixth-grade reading level:
http://autisticadvocacy.org/wp-content/ ... INAL-1.pdf

* “Adult”, written in standard simple English:
http://autisticadvocacy.org/wp-content/ ... INAL-1.pdf

Read "Welcome to the Autistic Community"!

I've read the first book and I find and feel that it's very positive. I feel that everybody should read it and not just people on the spectrum. I'll be reading the other books as well when I find some time. :)

I've read the rest of them and I think they're very well done. :)

I've read the adult version. It's great to read something about autism that's free from disease language. It should be read by all newly diagnosed autists, and their families.

The only downside is that the section on rights is only relevant to people in America.

@KenG:

Please update those links as they no longer work.
I was able to find the correct links by navigating through the ASAN site, but not everyone will be able to.

Thanks. :)

Thanks for letting me know.
I can't edit my original post, because WP posts can only be edited within 50 hours of being submitted.
