Lots of people in the autistic community like to talk about recent movies that make fun of autism but I think that we need a best/worst ever thread.

The most anti-autistic movie that I have ever seen was Grandma's Boy. I saw it when I was a teenager and I still regret seeing it. There are two characters in the film who are obvious autistic stereotypes. On is a man-child who sleeps in a bed shaped like a car and collects action figures. The other is a nearly sociopathic bad boss who has multiple personalites and he second personality speaks in robotic monotone.

Its an Adam Sandler movie, Cant say I'm surprised.

I just thought about them as man-children, not Aspies. And JP's character demonstrates that some Aspies definitely put the "ass" in Aspie. In other words, we're normal people.

I forgot that movie existed. But once I tried to watch it and had to turn it off.

A movie that presents that same idea in a kinder way was the 40 year old virgin. Although the first part of the movie was making fun of him, in the latter part we see that his collection was an investment that he was able to sell to help people he cared about, his friends who were making fun of him were actually sadder than he was, and he ended up with the hot lady.

Movies get a lot of stuff wrong. Gun owners must be psychotic, fighters block clairvoyantly, cars explode. Its either wrong or exaggerated and usually negative. When someone asks me about autism I say I'm like Brick from the show "the Middle". That is about as positive as I gets.

I hardly see the movie as anti-autistic because a couple characters fit certain autistic stereotypes or have certain traits. In other words it's just a movie...meant to be a comedy at that so certainly not meant to be taken seriously. I found some parts funny but over-all it was kind of a boring movie to me.

Um, I've seen it, and I don't at all remember it being anti-autistic. You may as well call The 40-Year-Old Virgin an anti-autistic film, as it's about a nerdy, possibly demi-sexual, middle-aged male who collects action figures, works at an electronics store, and has never had sex in his life.

I saw the the film as a over 40 year old virgin before I knew I was autistic with great trepidation and was very pleasantly surprised at the portrayal. The only really ridiculous thing was the "box of sand" joke. He came off as a mellow, nice guy whose co-workers liked him.

That's the thing, "The 40 Year Old Virgin" is NOT an anti-autistic film, and neither is "Grandma's Boy". I actually quite enjoyed both films, though I did find the way that the main character's friends in "The 40 Year Old Virgin" pressured him to be mildly annoying.

Lol, Adam Sandler hasn't had a good film since 2004, and that's pushing the limits of what's considered a "good" movie

Forget the movies...
