Matthew Garnett: Autistic teenager stuck inside psychiatric unit for six months 'is being kept like a prisoner' - The Independent

Petition

I imagine Wrong Planet's Kingdom of Rats is stuck in a similar situation.

I'd bet money that he is being mistreated by the staff or at the least disrespected. What staff members at the hospitals love to do is provoke patients by taunting them and play the victim when they are complained about.

Autistic teen set to be moved after successful petition to end six-month jail sentence in psychiatric ward

The vast majority of the people who signed the petition were most likely NT's

I didn't sign it because the article mentioned he was aggressive and hurt his mother so that was when he went there. I don't like violence, I don't like people hurting others. If someone is a danger to others, they should be put away somewhere. I don't want him back home hurting his family and other people. I think eh should be somewhere where people are more specialized in dealing with people with autism who are aggressive since the people there are not equipped in dealing with people like him.

I am glad he is being moved to a different facility where staff are more trained to dealing with autism.

Kingdom of Rats is a member of Wrong Planet with severe Autism. She was an advocate and teacher about the more severe end of the spectrum who pointed out ableism by higher functioning members of WP while still advocating for them. Several times she was sectioned or committed. She stopped posting a year or two ago so I wonder if she is stuck in facility.

This forum is a much lesser place without her.

It's often difficult for healthcare people to know what to do in cases of violent behavior, and I imagine that with a boy with such complex needs the difficulty is amplified. Unfortunately, and regrettably there isn't always enough space in specialist units. 6 months seems very excessive, but I would have liked to see far more details before coming to conclusions.

Minister to meet parents of Autistic boy held in secure unit for months

Quote:
Matthew is due to be transferred to St Andrew’s healthcare, a specialist unit in Northampton, but he has yet to be moved. Robin Garnett, his father, has said: “The fact he’s going there is not in dispute, it’s just that the beds are blocked"
