Donate your child's brain to autism speaks!

Overcome a 'taboo'.

Doesn't mention whether the child is dead or alive.

AutismSpeaksArticle wrote:
Asking parents to donate a child’s brain to research is emotionally fraught,” writes Nature reporter Alison Abbott. “Some researchers say that it is time to put aside the taboos.” Autism Speaks Autism Tissue Program (ATP) features prominently in Abbott’s just published feature story on the tissue bank shortage and how a small handful of organizations such as Autism Speaks are working to fill the void and speed research that can help individuals and families struggling with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism.

Among those providing perspective in the article is Autism Speaks Vice President of Translational Research Robert Ring, Ph.D. “Tissue-based research has the ability to literally transform our understanding of autism, its causes, and inform direction for treatment development,” Ring says. “It is the highest form of donation.”

A special thanks to all our participating ATP families. For more information on participation, please visit The ATP’s Family Overview page. You can download the complete Nature News feature story here.

I would think so too. The whole thing is bizarre though.

Still disturbing, especially if the child's death is under 'questionable' circumstances.

Is autism speaks being backward about it as usual? I will do my own research later but right now I'm on an iPod.

ok it says here that when you register you get a card to carry around so when you die your brain goes to them. that doesn't sound too bad but the whole idea still gives me the chills.... no wonder they have no people donating.

Aye, in that case then, nothing wrong with brain donations! I wonder who decides on giving the brain though.

I knew there was something fishy about the name "Hacking Autism."

My goodness, first they want to speak for us, now they want our brains! Those nazis! Joking again...

You guys, this isn't a black and white issue... It's grey... matter.

Ok, I'll stop.

I really don't see how this is any different from being an organ donor.

I guess I won't need my brain when I'm dead, but I'm not leaping to sign it away. Like Woody Allen said, it is my second favorite organ!

Did you suggest that I called autism speaks Nazis? I defended you when another guy said that. It's obvious that it's a joke, but it just goes to show how stab in the back you are.

Here we try to discuss things rather than make unlearned, suggestive, ignorant comments on the sidelines.

You ever hear of the term disingenuous? It would apply to the above comment.

Do parents get to chose whether their child's organs are donated? That's an important, relevant and interesting topic of discussion. So are you going to help or keep rattling on annoyedly?

Wouldn't it be easier to engage more with Autistic people and try and understand them as people? I suppose that at least they are trying to understand Autism, but I fear that this is a continuation of the search for a singular "cause," with the underlying objective being to find a "cure." So it all depends on what they do with the brain, and the premises they hold in doing this research.

But I honestly think that it would be better if they just listened to us, and we told them who and what we are, what issues we face, and what treatment we need. Whereas I don't see how looking at a few people's brains helps achieve these objectives, as well as the fact that it sounds creepy and creates bad PR.

I would really like to look at the positive side of this and say that their understanding of Autism will increase and it will have positive consequences. But it seems that the search for a cure still lies behind this, I don't really see what else it could be.
