only families allowed
I keep hearing about families, Politions say they are for families, improve your life for your family, this cares new safty features makes it ideal for familes,I improved my life for my family, Whaty about me? I want someone in offivce who is for everyone, including those who have no families! I want to improve my life for me! Am I supposed to live in a cardbox box because its wtrong to make life better for youself? I dont want to die in a car crash, i dont need anyone else to want a safer car! It seems its wrong to be an individual.
I know just what you mean. I was single all of my adult life until I married last November, at 42, and the difference in how you're treated once you're married versus when you're single is beyond incredible. It's truly infuriating and grossly unfair. Especially since there are more single people now in this country than ever before; in fact, married couples with families are now, statistically, in the minority.
There are hundreds of tangible and intangible benefits you acquire the second you're pronounced man and wife. Legal, tax, economic, social security, social, employment, employment benefits, etc., etc., etc., the list goes on and on. It shouldn't be that way at all. All people deserve dignity and respect and to be treated the same regardless of their marital status. And the incredible social pressure to be married has caused countless divorces as people marry the wrong person just to be married.
Marriage is great when it's good, mine is truly wonderful and I'm thankful for it every day. But I'm also thankful I waited, I cringe when I think of the one I almost married because I wanted to be married and what a disaster that would have been.
A person's marital status is absolutely no one else's business, period. Certainly not the government's or the employer's. And health insurance is often dependent on a spouse, I know mine is. Your access to health care should not depend on the status or existence of a romantic relationship.
I urge you to check out www.unmarriedamerica.com. It's the premier organization for American singles of every stripe and every age, whether never-married, divorced, widowed, living together, etc., etc. It's a great resource and source of support for singles.

I remember trying to join a church as a single person. The form had a space for mother, father, children .... um, what about ME? I scribbled a big note across it and said there apparently was no place for someone like me in their church.
The next church I filled out a membership form for had, thankfully, a space for "self."
Now that I am married with children, I am part of "family" as the world expects us to be. It's nice. But I am glad you brought this up, because those of us who are "families" need to be sure we don't make singles feel there isn't a place for them. There IS a place for you. In everything. But I know it often doesn't feel that way. I do remember.

I know exactly what you mean about the churches. Too many of them, of all denominations and religions, simply haven't grasped the need for ministry to singles and single-parent families as well, and continue to only focus on married couples and families.
Fortunately, I think that's finally starting to change in some church circles. They're realizing that they don't have to diminish their focus on and ministry to marrieds and marrieds with families in order to also have a ministry for singles. Those churches that do not recognize this and who do not also try to minister to singles and single-parent families in addition to married families will likely stagnate and stall in their growth, all the while wondering why.
Although I'm a Christian, I'm a liberal one and I don't go for a lot of the religious-right conservative yammerings and dogma. I especially didn't appreciate it all the years I was single and a single parent, particularly because I was a never-married single parent. But I stayed with a particular conservative, evangelical church for many, many years because they had a specific singles ministry, complete with a singles ministry pastor, in addition to their family and married ministry; they complemented each other. And it wasn't just a one-size-fits-all singles ministry, either, as too many of them tend to be right now. There were programs, classes, groups, activities for all types of singles, young and college-age, single parents, over-40, retired, divorced, widowed, never-married, etc., etc. The single parent group and ministry was an especial godsend to me, and a huge help spiritually and emotionally, for both my son and I, for many years. They made singles and single parents feel as welcome as families and married couples, which was, and still is, unusual in a lot of churches.
It wasn't until some people in the church started complaining about my aspie son's "strangeness" and "peculiar behaviors" as he got older and got into the teen years that I had any problems. The problems were compounded by the continued insistence of the pastors on "meetings" and certainly people and families seeming to "zero" in on him, watching every movement and then insisting on things being done THEIR way, instead of what I told them might help in their interactions with him, and their refusal to even try to understand his AS, or acknowledge that it existed (a lot of conservative church dogma, as a matter of fact, holds no truck with these "modern", but actually very old, conditions, and thinks it's all a matter of "lack of discipline"), that I finally had enough and told them where to put it and what to do with it. And we'd been there over ten years, too.

Politicians will often attach themselves to something that will most likely get everyone's attention, without creating too much controversy, in order to gain an election. They'll leave the real controversial stuff to when they're in office. And the only thing they can really think of focusing on most of the time is "the children". "The children" means that they care about the future of your children, why else would they use it? All they have to do is keep talking about how their cause is all about the children and before you know it, they're one of the top candidates in an election. Next thing you know, they get elected to office, and what do you know? They don't do a damn thing about these "children" they promised they would help, but they never really had a plan to begin with, you know?
If they mean the whole human family as a species. Not the 2 parents and a kid sense. I see each person as a member of a very large human family not that i let random persons into the house heeh. Some of the humans i can trust more others are on a limited trust base and i keep them at a distance.
I understand what you're saying, but that isn't really what we're referring to. We're talking about the married-couple-with-kids kinda family, the only one that really seems to count in this society.

I think it's funny. When we're single, we think that society, our churches, etc., don't do enough for singles. When we're married with no kids, we think that society, our churches, etc., don't do enough for childless couples. When we're married *with* kids, we think society, our churches, etc., don't do enough for families.
I hate to quote John F. Kennedy favorably, but I think it gets back to "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for the country."
When I start to gripe about what society should be doing for the disabled, I start to think of ways I can help other disabled people.
When I start to gripe about what society should be doing for big families with young kids, I try to reach out to other families I know and see how I can help them.
