agreed as unbelievable as it may sound a real experienced hunter I find less offensive than a supermarket eater

Out in rural Australia, hunting isn't a past time, it's a necessity to keep crops and livestock safe from introduced pests.

I don't hunt myself, but lots of people out on the Darling Downs go out hunting feral pigs and rabbits to try and keep the numbers down. It also helps the natives by getting rid of their competition and predators (yes, feral pigs will go for young kangaroos and wallabies).

and the other ferals like cows or sheep? their a introduced species to, guess it's not considered a pest cause theirs money to be made?

This is the first time I have ever heard of it. I wouldn't even classify it as hunting.

I have been living in rural Virginia, US for over 10 years (what's up, Sherlock?), in a place where people still hunt, fish, grow their own food, chop wood. I don't know how to do any of those things, really, but when my Heating/Air unit goes out in a snowstorm, they are warm and cozy, cooking venison stew on the woodstove. It makes me sad that these basic skills are being lost on urban folk and my brother and I have been talking about learning to shoot.

than why would the nra approve of it ? I keep reading about the thrill of the chase, where is the thrill here ?it 's akin to slaves fighting hungry lions in the day, where is the sport in it? it's sadism . no better than those crush videos , though crushers are in lesser numbers than hunters so it goes on sadly .

I enjoy the shooting sports. As I boy I went hunting several times, but was more into the shooting part of it than the early cold hours of waiting around.

I have been watching Discovery channel shows about living in the Alaska wilderness, and can wax romantic about summer hunting so that there is food to eat during the long winter. But living in the city, I can also appreciate the convenience of the local butcher shop.

I just wish that for a few years they would declare open season on the wild hogs here in the southern U.S., and on the pythons in the Everglades. Sometimes it seems we are near getting an overrun imbalance like happens in Australia and some other places.

Marky9, I understand - the deer here are at a pest status, too, which is the only reason I will allow for it. I also detest the idea of hunting for sport.

It's a beautiful state. I think there is a certain sense of reward from learning self sufficient skills.



I wouldn't know. You could try asking them. The general hunting mantra, espoused by most hunters, is to never be cruel or disrespectful. In the rare case someone breaks this rule they usually get smacked across the head and told to get the he!! out of here. I hunt with the one shot mantra ( although I carry more than one cartridge) , which means that you only take a shot that is ethical and will kill the animal with the least amount of pain. There is no place in hunting for cruel or disrespectful behavior. I use an SMLE, which I know is quite popular down under.

If it's feral, it gets shot. Not many feral cows or sheep though, it's mainly pigs for some strange reason.

Not that I'm a farmer (in fact I got out of the country ASAP and now live the cushy life in the city) but you'd hear all the time how feral animals would get into crops and livestock, usually with a lot of swearing involved.

Also I admit to being a reluctant Mike Tyson supporter after watching Spike Lee's movie"Undisputed Truth" - maybe he would be able to gain an audience about what it means to fight fair with the type of moral derelicts who pay for this???? Interesting idea. I wish we could get Mike, Jane Fonda, Jennifer Anniston, Bradd Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Dolly Parton.....

Bring Mike Tyson out there to yell at a bunch of armed rednecks while they are hunting and he's gonna get shot. I don't agree with them shooting him, but that's what would happen.

I've also never heard of anybody hunting pigeons. It's mainly deer, boar, turkey, duck and coon around here. I don't think they eat the coons though, they just keep the tails. They are pests so it's sort of a thing to go out in the middle of the night with specially trained dogs and shoot them out of trees.

I bet though, if you were hungry enough and there was no vegetation around that was edible, you'd hunt.
