i got mine in december of 1988, on a holiday discount, @$330. but the extras i bought for it added that much again to the price. i paid for an SRAM 5-speed internal hub transmission, a smaller rear sprocket, various bits and pieces to make it fit, plus labor to install it all. but it transformed the bike into a real commuter bike. i think your bike shop is charging more than it ought to be charging, like they might be trying to sell you an 8 speed shimano instead of the 5-speed SRAM. shimano internals cost an arm and a leg. find a shop that sells giant bikes. or find one gently used.
