20 or more years ago it was a cool thing and socially acceptable, not anymore at least in America. I never thought it was cool but sill got addicted. Smoking can be very addictive to aspies and be a nightmare to quit even thought you know it is damaging you. I used Zyban to break the addictive cycle, not exactly pleasant but I am very happy to be free.

I also smoke, though not because of peer-pressure. It sounds stupid, but I suffer from severe depression and started partly in an attempt to stop self-harming in other ways. It's comforting to me right now to know that I may be shortening my life. I also like the taste and smell, having an escape route from social situations, and find the occasional headrush a welcome relief when i'm feeling s**t... It also sounds silly but though I look older than my age (i'm 16 now but when I was 13 i'd have people tell me they thought I was in my 20's) I have a voice that I hate, I think I sound very young/high-pitched/on the verge of tears, so though it would not signal very good health, I would kinda welcome the idea of a slightly huskier voice... does anyone else feel that their voice sounds unusual?

I don't know where the idea of Aspie's not smoking came from, though some of the points made do sound quite logical in a percentage of cases...

Good luck to anyone thinking of quitting, you can do it =)

I'd never smoke tobacco myself as I see no real benefit to it aside from netting greater control over the brains reward system i.e. if I get this bit of work done I'll have a smoke, etc.
I'm already happy with the operation of that area of my brain - I'm pretty unmotivated most of the time but only because what I am doing or have been told to do is boring crap so its just a natural response. That said; if I find something I'm really interested in that seems relevant to me I'll stick at it for hours.

I smoke and take other things occasionally for recreation and reflection like cannabis and psychedelics. I prefer to stick to things that don't force me to come back to them as that way I'm doing them more for the experience itself than to escape from the world permanently or find endless comfort and purpose.

The AS will be history in the next DSM, so stop thinking yourselves as special species.

I started smoking out of curiosity- because I couldn't figure out the allure of it. Now, it's become a crutch when I'm stressed out.

I hate it and never saw the point in starting a drug that has no high whatsoever, but I guess I can't judge. I've made plenty of stupid mistakes in the past; I'm just glad that was never one of them. As for whether Aspies are any less likely to smoke than NTs, I honestly have no idea.

Actually you can get high on nicotine, not by smoking a cigarette though...unless it's your first cigarette ever, or the first one after a couple days without a cigarette.

Both parents smoked. I saw that and got curious about what the strange thing was they kept puffing on, so I yoinked a few from a pack left on a table and tried it. They were nasty, but I figured most things adults do are probably nasty and I started stealing them once in a while to see if they were still nasty. Eventually they stopped being nasty. Thus, I now smoke.

Strangely, the peer pressure to get me to quit smoking is one of the things that contributes to the continuation of the habit.

I smoke because I enjoy smoking cannabis and used to mix tobacco and cannabis in joints.

I start to smoke the leftover tobacco on it's own and became addicted.

Like Sweetleaf the argument of 'it is going to kill you' only illicits a response of good saves me the job then doesn't it. I don't actually have any will to live from one day to the next, so I'm not concerned in the slightest about the possibility of decades away.
