I had a preliminary exam over the weekend, and the person there said that my head fell about three inches forward from my ear canals. She suggested that this was pretty serious, so I scheduled a complete exam for tomorrow.

I've never been to a chiropractor before. Any advice?

Was your preliminary exam at the chiropractor's or the doctor's office? If it was at the doctor's, the chiropractor's will probably do blood pressure and x-rays for the first visit, so expect to be there for awhile.

From my experience, the first neck adjustment is the most disturbing; it gets better after that. Some people end up getting used to it, some don't. You'll probably have to go back multiple times to get it all straightened out and keep it that way.

Just relax; that's the biggest thing. It's pretty scary with the neck thing, but the chiropractor should be good about that. He might try to distract you and do it while you're not suspecting it; they had to do that with me, on almost every visit. Drop your shoulders and relax.

Also, try to wear a looser shirt. If there's something off with your back as well, they'll lift your shirt in order to run a device that gauges... well, to be honest, I'm not exactly sure what it gauges, but those are the points that need to be adjusted. For the adjustment it yourself, your shirt will be back down.

Hope it all goes well for you.

It was a field exam, so I suspect that it was a preliminary preliminary exam. :) I think the X-rays are tomorrow.

But thanks for the heads up, regardless.

I have gone to chiropractors, on and off, for a long time. I still don't like the unsettling feeling when they "crack" my neck, but it feels much better, afterword. For someone who sits in front of a computer as much as I do, it's good that I see a chiropractor periodically.

I'm not sure what a field exam is. The x-rays are boring and tedious but they're helpful. I don't know how they do it there, but in the office I went to, they showed up the x-rays as they went over them, which is kind of interesting.

But hartzofspace reminded me of something else - take an Advil or something before you go. You will end up feeling better after the adjustment, but sometime it takes some time. That's the advice that my old chiropractor gave me, and he was great.
