I take fish oil supplements for the anti-inflammatory effects and general health reasons. It's hard to get those kinds of omega-3 fatty acids anywhere else except real fish, which is either extremely expensive or a concern because of contaminants. The levels used to be much higher in beef, but these days cattle are fattened up with grain instead of being grass fed.

I started taking 1000 mcgs of b12 and noticed an improvement in my mental stamina. I started my son on them and although he says he doesn't feel any different, I noticed an improvement in his ability to initiate and complete school projects. His grades went up too.

yes, its worrying about there being so much murcury in fish and animals not fed on grass
I eat salmon or sole or herring most days to get my fish oils, I found the supplement made me burp fish for hours and I hated that!
Im trying the udos oil as its supposed to be the nearest thing to fish in terms of omega make up. I took it years ago and found it made me feel better and have better skin.

My brother is a Naval officer and a few years back had to take an anti malarial because he was going down into South America. He had a strange reaction, developed some paranoid symptoms and some deficits in his executive functioning. They later determined he was no longer able to make b12 or retain it (I'm not sure which) and now has to take monthly shots or his functioning level is greatly reduced. It's kind of funny though because my sister in law freaks out if he forgets the milk or something and that's me normal.

Fresh, additive-free whole foods can provide a little better quality of fuel for the human body and brain than refined foods filled with fillers, additives, and chemical preservatives. Shopping at places like Whole Foods and Trader Joe's can give a person an idea of the many natural foods available. A blender like the Vita-Mix allows a person to turn fresh foods like vegetables and fruits into smoothies. In general I tend toward foods which provide good protein like salmon, eggs, chicken, and so on. Good foods, pure water, and physical exercise are important for overall health for everyone. Personally, do not look at nutrition in general as a cure for anything at all. Eating healthy, balanced meals is a good thing. - http://www.nutrition.gov/

Yeah this is a know side effect for malaria drugs and some of the other ones they give the military. I have know people who skipped their pills to avoid this. I don't know which is worse- malaria or psychosis, but dang that is a tough choice to have to make, isnt it?
I take cranberry tablets to prevent UTI because i just don't want to drink cranberry juice (I have to watch the sugar too). I also try to remember the multivitamin but it is hard. I dont think I get enough vitamins/minerals in my diet, so I really should take them. I tried those fish oils, but I cant stand the repeats they give me, and I have tried storing them in the freezer. Fish burps are just gross! B12 pills make me nauseous too, LOL. SUcks to be me.

Yes, this was several years ago and I found out recently things are getting worse. He is acting irrationally and we are all sick with worry.

If he is out of the military he should file a claim with the VA for compensation. They can also make sure he gets treatment. It is a known issue, like a lot of the Gulf War Syndrome ailments. A lot of us got exposed to asbestos in some of the older WWII buildings on some bases, too. They even ask specific questions on the forms about these issues because they are well known. They have to treat him and will compensate. The paperwork just takes some time.

He is being retired now and not taking it well. He is an MD and a classic case of a doctor that doesn't pay attention to his own health issues.
