Almost all my family members have it.

My blood test scored 10 for vit D (which is very low), and its lack is correlated with higher risk of cancer, and yes there's a rich record of cancer among the family.

That might be surprising to some, but darker-skin people, even those who are living in sunny countries (despite their fish/vegetables-rich cuisine) , are times prone to vitamin D Deficiency, their skin simply do not absorb much vitamin D . Darker skins need more sun to get the same amount of vitamin D as a fair-skinned persons, that's due to radical change of their lifestyles, darker-people are supposed to live under the sun and not be working in offices and play xbox at homes.

According to studies, Europeans have 30% to 40% higher levels of vit D. Vit D levels, by average, are often higher in Caucasians.

So who has Vitamin D Deficiency here and what's the skin color?

Symptoms of bone pain and muscle weakness can mean you have a vitamin D deficiency. However, for many people, the symptoms are subtle. Yet even without symptoms, too little vitamin D can pose health risks. Low blood levels of the vitamin have been associated with the following:

Increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease
Cognitive impairment in older adults
Severe asthma in children
Cancer
Research suggests that vitamin D could play a role in the prevention and treatment of a number of different conditions, including type1 and type 2 diabetes, hypertension, glucose intolerance, and multiple sclerosis.

I never sensed any symptoms myself, but I felt I am having a little hard time at the gym.

I would guess most of us are vitamin D deficient due to not only skin color, but also working in doors most for the day. What I do is test my D3 circulating levels with one of the home testing kits. I've seen several places sell them. Over the weekend I just purchased a new kit from here:

"Vitamin D Home Blood Test Kit"

In the past I've had my doctor perform the test.

I had a pretty severe deficiency as of the last time it was checked, a few years ago-
the doctor remarked that it was usually only seen in "developing" countries, where malnutrition is rampant.
He put me on a prescription supplement for a time..
my eating habits have only worsened since then, so no telling what it is now.

I'm white as can be.

This is one of my special interests (i.e. epigenetics, population migrations and health).

I live in a country severely lacking in sunlight (Scotland). We have the highest incidence of MS in the world (along with some other health records that we are not proud of) and I wouldn't be surprised if this was the major factor. I'm white, but not so white (I look more southern European than northern), so I've probably got more cause for concern than most. I've never had my vit D level tested, but type 2 diabete runs in my family (amongst slim people, not the typical cases), so I should probably ask for a vit D test next time I see my doc.

My best friend's parents are Jamaican and emigrated here 50 years ago. Her dad died last year, of a heart condition. He also had type 2 diabetes and prostate cancer (I think the link between this and vit D deficiency has been researched). Her mum and older sister also have type 2 diabetes. I know Jamaicans are prone to these conditions anyway, but maybe their chances were not helped by living in darkness. That said, the sky is blue as I type. 8)

I read it the other night in Discover Magazine, so thought to mention. in this months Discover, in the health section, was a medical case about how a doctor discovered his patients poor health condition was caused by a deficiency of vitamin D.

^^
Father has type 2 diabetes and got treated for prostate cancer before.
Mom got treated for breast cancer not a long time ago.
My brother has ulcerative colitis (or to be more accurate , the traces of it) and type 1 diabetes since he was a teen.

We all have Vitamin D deficiency.

I need to be exposed to the sun more frequently.
