Are there any side effects from when they scan your brain?

I have one every 3 months, besides getting woozy from the contrast fluid I feel fine.

I have 1 every 6 months and haven't noticed any side effects.

I've had two done. (Injuries.) They take a looong time. First took 20 minutes. Second took 40 minutes. You must remain still the entire time. There are no side effects. Actually you don't feel anything during or after. They may put padded weights on you to keep you still. The machine makes a lot of whirring and clicking sounds. The entire experience is more boring than anything else.

Metals and powerful superconducting magnets do not mix. They will have you take off all your jewelry and watch and piercings and things like that, and leave them with your keys and phone in a tray or a locker far away from the MRI machine. Better to come prepared. Just put on tennis shoes, yoga-type pants and a plain t-shirt. Nothing more.

Surgical metal if you have any (dental implants, bone screws etc...) are made of titanium and are MRI safe.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I really appreciate it. I asked because I'm going to participate in some autism research - they're going to show me patterns while I'm being scanned. I'm boring - I don't have any piercings or other jewellery.

And yes, I had an MRI scan when I was 13 with a foot fracture (they suspected a tumour but it was nothing). It takes a bloody long time!!

I have had ten MRI's done (5 bolts, 6 screws and 4 plates in 7 vertebae my neck and back). Absolutely nothing to fear. Just try to take a nap. I can sleep through anything.

I had one done a few months ago, after I was hit by a drunk driver and it wasn't too bad. Like someone said above, they are thought to be safer than CT scans and x-rays. For me, the main thing was the noise. They gave me foam earplugs to wear; it might not hurt to bring a set along, just in case they don't have any extra available for you to use. Good luck!
