The first joint on my thumb is suddenly swollen and very tender. What causes something like this to happen all at once? Could repetetive motion cause it? I use a computer mouse pretty much all day, and have been for nearly 14 years.

I've switched my mouse to the other hand but it still hurts.

Hopefully, it is just some tendonitis or some sort of repetitive strain injury and rest and ice will help.

But, if you notice your joints begin to swell bilaterally (ie. both thumbs, both wrists, etc), then it would be a good idea to see your GP or a rheumatologist. He or she could do blood tests for you to make sure it's not something more serious, like Rheumatoid Arthritis or Lupus.

I used to get that from time to time in a single knuckle, never figured out what it was, always went away on its own.

Now Iam old though and have worn out my joints with a lifetime of hard work and riding English motorcycles in sub-zero temperatures, I am starting to get a bit of joint pain in my hands, not the single swelling type I used to get, anyway, I recently bought a jar of Nectar Balm Bee Venom Cream which does help somewhat.

Bee interesting to find out if it would help whatever I used to get, but obviously make sure you are not allergic to bee stings before you try it.

Try icing it for about twenty minutes and taking ibuprofen. If it persists, I'd get it looked at.

Do you text a lot or use a mobile browser often? That could hurt your thumbs if you're non-stop texting frequently. I forget the term that is used, but I remember reading an article on it.
