i rarely eat red meat (due to it being associated with heart disease and colon and pancreatic cancer), but a few weeks ago at the grocery, one of my favorite sample ladies was offering a small portion of pork loin with a spice rub that she'd just cooked up. it was tasty. last week i started having a small area of pain in a forearm muscle. it was swollen, too. muscle cancers are rare and i didn't injure myself, so i though it might be a parasite. then i remembered the pork. i had a blood test today to test for eosinophils (infection-fighting cells that respond to parasites). i had a similar test two weeks ago for a pre-operative evaluation, so if there is a rise in that type of cell, it would point to trichinosis.
there is probably a little worm in my muscle that can't be killed by any med we know of. it will take a good while for the pain to go away. one ingests the parasites through eating undercooked pork, bear, or walrus. i'm just glad i had such a small serving of pork. the pain is significant. if i had more worms, i might be incapacitated.

Whoa, and I thought trichinosis was virtually impossible to get from North American pork nowadays. :O

Well, look on the bright side, you just justified my position on being pork free, lol. Sorry you feel like crap, hope you get better soon.

You're an ex-doctor. You know what you're talking about.

I hope your pain eases soon.

I'm surprised there is no treatment for trichinosis.
