Autoimmune conditions generally more common in females.

In general, more females than males have autoimmune conditions, with perhaps some exceptions as the below letter to Lancet argues.

However, we wish to make two points-first, myasthenia gravis (MG) seems to be an autoimmune disease with a more complicated and idiosyncratic distribution between the sexes, and second, the 75% value mentioned above is incorrect.

Although MG is generally seen as an autoimmune disease with a 2:1 femaleto-male ratio (but not the 3:1 implied by the 75% value mentioned), this ratio refers to the prevalence rather than to the incidence ratio. We have shown that the female-to-male incidence ratio is 1:1, which agrees with the unequal prevalence ratio. Specifically, of the 601 incident cases identified in Greece between 1986 and 1997, 301 were women and 300 men. The discrepancy between the incidence and prevalence ratios is clearly related to differences in the average age of onset between women and men (40·1 vs 55·1 years), which, since mortality from MG is very low, means that the theoretical life expectancy after MG onset in women is almost double that in males (40·9 years and 23·4 years, respectively). . . '


The two authors include four references. But all the same, this is a letter to the editor, not a peer-reviewed article.

Alright, I am open-minded to the idea that autoimmune conditions cause some cases of autism. But the fact that autoimmune conditions are more common in females and autism is more commonly diagnosed in males, that does cast some doubt.

Maybe the fact that autism is underdiagnosed in females swamps the rate of natural occurrence. Maybe. And also just the idea that autism probably has multiple causes and any one cause, of any type, only explains some cases.

This doesn't surprise me. Testosterone is an immunosuppressant. Which means that higher testosterone levels are likely to be protective against the inflammatory reactions that cause autoimmune disease.

Of course this also means that men are more susceptible to infectious disease than women, which partially explains the shorter life expectancy of the male sex. There is no free lunch in nature.

I remember reading one science book written for the general audience which argued that even though we have a lot of names for things in the immune system, we don't really understand it as well as we like to think we do. Sometimes the immune system goes overboard, other times underboard, and often it finds a happy medium. Like with the beneficial and neutral bacteria in our guts.

And often neutral bacteria can end up being beneficial because they take available real estate and make it harder for infectious disease to spread.

The theory is that the autoimmune disease of a pregnant woman makes it more likely that her baby will be born autistic.

For the record, I am an NT woman with rheumatoid arthritis and an autistic daughter. This is consistent with their speculations. If she were an autistic boy instead of an autistic girl, it would still be consistent since it's the pregnant woman whose autoimmune disease is speculated to be causative- or at least triggering.

Although we want to take research step by step as I'm sure we all agree, this does sound like a promising line well warranting further research.

I have been diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and I am male. Its a bummer man.

A co-worker of mine had Hashimoto's. It wasn't as bad after she got it diagnosed, but it took about six months to get there.

All of the women in my family have asthma, including me. Thankfully there are drugs that treat it well enough for me to be able to function pretty normally. The silver lining is that we rarely get sick.

What I've heard speculated is that something about the way that the woman's body has to play host to a foreign organism (the zef) without attacking it, makes for a somewhat confused immune system; I think that the idea already presented, that testosterone is an immune suppressant, makes a little bit more sense given the data, but it's hard to figure out *why* such a suppressive function would have evolved.
Newborns have suppressed immune systems to allow their guts and skins to be colonized with the (hopefully) beneficial flora that they pick up from their mothers, but I can't think of why male adults would need a similar effect.
