By saying that Haruhi looks at him as if he is ret*d, is like saying that people with disabilities are ret*ds.

...Don't worry, no one else will interpret what the author wrote in the way you just did.

By the way, the word "dumb" used to refer to mute (which are usually also deaf) people. And the word "moron" also used to refer to mentally ret*d people.

I guess I don't see why it should be a degrading word, especially considering the dictionary definition...why is slowness something to look down on anyone for?

That is not how language works. Mental retardation doesn't mean "retardation in the mind".

Wait how isn't how language works? I am kind of confused...I was saying the word ret*d means slowed, I wasn't defining the term mentally ret*d...which I know what that means still don't think there is anything 'wrong' with being mentally ret*d so what I am saying is if the word was not used as an insult and used appropriately I think that would be a better approach then banning it as some dirty word.

Just because people are different or may have disabilities does not make them lessor people.

When the disability is as severe as mental retardation, yes it does. A severely ret*d person cannot do the same things everyone else can.

I think the point was they should not be treated inferior beings due to their disability...not that they don't have less abilities than someone without the disorder.

I am not doing this to attack you so don't take it that way, I just don't understand.

Well... it kind of just goes back to what I said about people treating me like I am one. But I'm not at all because I can function normally... I just can't cook or clean because I lack the executive functioning and the ability. But back then, I didn't know the r-word was a big deal either. I only now found this campaign to change the meaning for what mental retardation is.

Okay, I see.

I don't really care about that word. It's just one of those words that have many meanings. No sense getting offended.

My husband works with mentally handicap people, when not doing AF things. They have switched the name they refer to them so many times because people are offended, usually parents... I think at this point they are called individuals.

If you don't think there's anything wrong with being mentally ret*d, you should go ask a mentally ret*d person whether or not he would get rid of his mental retardation if given the choice.

If you have a severe disability, you're going to be treated differently. Whether or not you consider that as being treated inferiorly is another matter.
