Is having music playing in your head an auditory hallucination or an early sign of schizophrenia, or an auditory hallucination of schizophrenia?
(Just read this somewhere)

Most likely not. Everyone gets songs stuck in their head from time to time.

I think the key thing is that hallucinations seem real and outside of yourself, so hearing music inside your head doesn't count.

One time I was on a med that had mild hallucinations as a side effect. Before bed I was cutting my big toenail and noticed newsprint on my toe. I couldn't figure out how it got there. I guessed that maybe a scrap of newspaper got into my sock and moisture transferred the ink over. But the text wasn't a mirror image. It made no sense, but seemed perfectly real. And then it occurred to me that it might not be real, so I focussed for a second and it faded away right before my eyes. Until that moment, though, I was sure that the print was really there.

I've had hallucinations of music that seemed to come from outside of my head and seemed real. They also are songs that don't exist or haven't been written yet.

Hearing music that sounds definitely real is an auditory hallucination, but not one associated with schizophrenia. It's associated with ear infections and hearing loss. Basically, your sense of hearing is so understimulated that your brain makes things up to compensate. I have hearing loss as a result of multiple ear infections. When my ear is infected and I can hardly hear at all, I hallucinate music.

It's called Musical Ear Syndrome: http://www.hearinglosshelp.com/articles/mes.htm
