speech probllems?
I would like to start out by saying I"m not sure where to put this, so, if this is in the wrong place sorry.
I have speech problems. I've always had speech problem; when I was very young, and learning to talk, I talked very fast that only a few people, mostly my mom, could under me. When I started school, I guess this became a problem because I can reminder going to speech therapy. I don't remember doing in therapy long, which is odd.
I don't think I very grew out of talking fast, just got a better hand on how to talk slower.
But for a while, I don't remember exactly when it started,(sometimes in my teenage years and I'm 22 now) I've been having problems with my speech other than talking fast. I have problems saying words, like it at the tip of my tongue but worst because see the word in my head. Sometimes I can spell the word out but because of my dyslexic that can sometimes make spelling a problem. Or other times, I'll be talking perfectly fine and my sentence will just turn not making any scene of what I was just talking about or I'll just stop talking, altogether, for no reason( I have a feeling that that stop talking frozen thing is more from me having ADD.) I can't remember words well either, and not hard words but everyday words.
My biggest problem is where I just don't say the word correctly. For an explain: Just the other day I was telling my Dad about the day Saturday. And I just completely said the word wrong! I actually said the word wrong two more times before finally saying Saturday like I wanted.
I was just wonder does anyone else have problems like this with speech.
I only have speech problems insofar that I rarely ever speak my mother tongue anymore. I live in Germany, but everything I read and watch is in English. I buy English books and DVDs, download English TV shows, and my only real social contact is through online games and discussion boards. I even speak English with my cats (well, to my cats, not with them. They rarely ever talk back
).
On the rare occasions where I have to speak German, I find myself using English grammar and occasionally English words. Sometimes I get stuck and simply can't remember a German word or a phrase. Or I literally translate an English phrase into German, which sounds completely weird. But that's quite different from your problem I guess, although the result is similar.
I have Dyslexia, ADHD, APD, and other LDs they all impair me pretty badly. I do have inconsistency with my speech sometimes I'll say the wrong word and not what I was thinking of and I'll also think in pictures instead of words. I can't spell well either. It really really sucks. I also get fairly self conscious about it. If you have speech problems and learning disabilities it's highly likely you have HFA or some kind of autism spectrum disorder.

Hi Lilithlee,
Sorry if I spelled that incorrectly. You are not alone in having problems with speech, it is more common than you might think, and it can happen for a variety of reasons.
It's hard to tell from your written description, but you might stutter - there are many forms of stuttering and you describe a problem with your rate of speech as well as a problem where you can't get the word out - it sounds like something called 'blocking'.
I used to be a speech pathologist (speech therapist) until I got Bipolar disorder. But I recommend consulting a currently practicing professional speech pathologist, since the average person can't differentiate different types of speech disorders.
Adults can't be cured of stuttering but they can learn to manage it. You might want to watch the movie "The King's Speech" and see if you can relate. As I said before, I can't be sure from your written description whether I am correct or not and also I am no longer in practice.
I actually do have speech problems. I tend to talk too fast and I'll stumble over my words, especially when I'm nervous. I also have a bit of a lisp. I can read, spell and pronounce words perfectly, it's just my speech itself that needs working on. I try to remember to slow down when I'm talking. Also, I process things in my brain really slowly so sometimes my mind will go blank and I'll forget what I was about to say but that also has to do with my social anxiety as well.
