My family doctor has me as having bipolar disorder. I have never been diagnosed with it and I show none of the symptoms of it. How do I get him to make the correction?
You can either request him to remove it from your file, or you can get a referral for a specialist psychiatric assessment and get the psychiatrist to write a letter to your family doctor stating that you do not have bipolar disorder.
Or you can find a new doctor if you find your family doctor too difficult to deal with. Communication between you and your doctor is of utmost importance and you need someone who can communicate well with you.
If there is no other suitable doctor you will have to make the most of what you have got. To improve communication with your doctor, you might try the following strategies.
-make a list of things you want to discuss with him before you go in.
-do not interrupt the doctor
-speak factually, not emotionally
-ask lots of questions
-check you have addressed everything on the list before you leave
-write down the key points of what the doctor says
-write down your actions for follow up and the doctor's actions.
Also, I believe your reply on this post has offended some of the people in the forum. They were offering you free advice on their good will. You were probably frustrated when you wrote it. Apologising would be a good idea.
