Do you have closed captions in your head? If so, whenever you say whatever captions are running through your head, does it make you feel weird? If your parent or wife or whoever is yelling at you and you piece together what she is screaming about in your head unwillingly using these captions, do you feel agitated and stressed?
I'd like to hear your thoughts!

Um... not exactly.

I have captions in my head (they're in an old-style serif font as if written on a typewriter, I have no idea why) but I don't exactly read them off, it's more like they scroll along simultaneous with my speaking. And they don't bother me - I'm not always aware of them, and they don't seem to serve any function.

Maybe the difference in our experience is that I only get captions for my own words and not other people's? Maybe captioning can be either receptive or expressive, so you and I have different kinds?

I wish I had captions in my head. Sometimes, my short-term memory is for the birds.....

I do. Especially when I am asked how to spell something, I can just see the entire word in this area in the upper part of my view. Everything is words to me, really.

Nah, doesn't help with memory. A few seconds later I've forgotten what the caption said. My memory is hopeless.
Domepiece is right, though, it does help with spelling.

Yes, I "see" whatever I hear in front of my eyes like a teleprompter, both what I say out loud and what others say out loud. I have it to a lesser extent when I'm thinking internally. I've heard that it's a rare form of synesthesia called ticker-tape synesthesia. I don't remember when it started, but I believe it's been around since I was in middle school. I don't think I had it when I was younger, though, as I used to have trouble spelling in early elementary school, and as others have said, the "captions" make me an excellent speller. I didn't become exceptional at spelling until third grade. Before then, I would know the first and last letter a word would start with, but I'd mix up the middle letters. Like, I'd spell "bird" as "brid". I taught myself to read (I was hyperlexic), so I had no conception of phonics and sounding out words when I was young.

I see them when I'm listening to music sometimes, and with some of the thoughts I have.

Wait a minute.

If someone in your household yells at you..you see closed captioning...the text of the words they are yelling at you?

Or is it that you see text of what you're thinking in response, and feel weird that you're like reading a teleprompter when you respond to the person?

Or is it that both things happen?

In any of the above it cracks me up.

Maybe you can train your brain to dub all dialogue in your household into … Cantonese! Like a Bruce Lee movie in reverse.

Then you can freak out your momma by replying in Cantonese...and even have your lips keep moving for a few seconds after your voice stops !

Sorry. Cant help but riff on it.
