I've been trying to get into present-day music lately, but I'm having a hard time finding any that I really like! The vast majority of my music collection is from pre-2000, and most of that is even from the 60s and 70s. However, it's always exciting to be able to follow artists as they actually produce new music and to be able to see them in concert and such. Really the only more current bands I can think of that I enjoy are Dave Matthews Band, Radiohead, and Damien Rice.

So, does anyone have any suggestions? For a bit of background about my tastes, I'm really big into a lot of the old folk rock, such as CSNY, Jim Croce, Fairport Convention, and such. Really the 3 things that I notice in most modern music that turn me off are: far too much repitition/predictability, lack of any interesting instrumentation (the instrumentals almost always take a definitive secondary role to the vocals), and boring or superficial lyrics. I also typically like softer and mellower music as opposed to things like heavy metal or hard rock.

Thanks for the advice, I look forward to hearing suggestions!

some names that come to mind I think you may like are Caroline Herring, Regina Spektor, and Bon Iver.

The only post-2000 band I really like is Mumford and Sons. I mostly listen to classic rock, so I am not of much help.

If you're interested in folk rock, you're in luck. There have been a whole slew of indie folk and baroque pop bands to arise since 2000. Mumford & Sons and Bon Iver have already been mentioned. I would also highly recommend Fleet Foxes. Two full-length LPs into their career, it's already abundantly obvious that they've got serious songwriting talent.

The problem is you want both interesting instrumentation and soft music. The fact of the matter is that is that most music with instrumental emphasis is heavier, and there are several reasons for that. The first is heavier music is more versatile, you can have more notes and sounds to work with and such, the second is that vocal emphasis is easier with softer music, so the two camps have split. As the other people said there is some good Folk Rock, there might also be some Neoclassical stuff that might suite you.

I don't necessarily want instrumental emphasis, I just like it when instrumentals are used for more than just background harmonics, and actually carry some of the melody. I find the instrumentals in many modern songs to just be so repetitive with next to no variation from start to end. And I'm not totally opposed to heavier stuff, the main reason I put that in my post is because when I ask this question I usually get suggestions for all sorts of heavy metal/screamo bands, and I can't stand either of those genres! Rock is fine though, I'm a pretty big fan of pearl jam and led zeppelin to name a few.

Check out the link here for more obscuro stuff than you've probably ever heard in your life. --Some of it is old to be quite sure, but a lot of it is fairly new.

Well you might like these:
The Black Angels
Singapore Sling
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
The Warlocks
Wooden Shjips
The Dolly Rocker Movement
The Black Heart Procession
The Devils Blood(heavy metal but not too extreme with a female vocalist)

anyways there is lots of good music, it just doesn't get much media attention.

I also highly recommend Fleet Foxes. One of Robin Pecknold's big influences was English folk rock from the '70s, especially Steeleye Span (he thanks Maddy Prior in the liner notes on their first full-length). I got to meet Robin, Casey and Morgan last year when they played here. :D :D :D

Try Josh Tillman's stuff, too. He was the drummer for the Fleet Foxes but I think he quit. He's an amazing songwriter in his own right, as is his younger brother, Zach (Pearly Gate Music).

And maybe Native Roses?

By Heavy Metal, do you mean Death Metal and the like (the stuff with the "unclean" vocals), Traditional Heavy Metal, or all metal? The term Heavy Metal was first used to describe Led Zeppelin. A lot of the stuff that people call Rock nowadays is really more like Traditional Heavy Metal than Classic Rock. There is some metal that's fairly mellow, mainly some of the progressive and alternative stuff, though it might be partly be that I can't really tell what's mellow or not anymore, haha. Maybe you should just ignore everything I say and focus on Mumford and Sons, you will probably like them.

I'd recommend Fleet Foxes and Mumford and Sons for you as many others have suggested. I'd also add First Aid Kit, Girls, The Shins, Mystery Jets & Laura Marling. Of Monsters and Men, Alt-J, Hudson Taylor and Bison are some more recent acts that have popped up that look promising.

I'd second Mumford and Sons and Of Mice and Men. Love them.

I listen to Adele and Florence + The Machine a bit when I work out and work recommend some of their stuff if you are looking for something with a good tempo.

If you like more roots-rock type music, like I do, though, I'd check out Ryan Adam's last album (or anything by him from over the years), The Lumineers or Ray LaMontagne. For neo-folk music, maybe you might want to try The Avett Brothers.
