Steampunk is an interesting genre no doubt. There is a lot of authors and artists who have been putting this stuff out for years now, though it's recently began to pick up in popularity. I think that once the current hipster obsession with the Zombie genre dies down that there is a good chance that Steampunk will rise to take it's place, which will no doubt bring about some interesting and cool high budget films and tv shows.

I recently ran across a book on 'How to Make Steampunk Jewelry' and I'm inspired ! ! Some of the trinkets on Ebay are quite inspirational also.

Prepared to dress like a flapper with the bobhawk and all? Though I'm sure there is some dieselpunk jewelery out there.

Anyways, I'm currently researching/outlining a dieselpunk story. I'm also (soon to be) betaing a dieselpunk novel by someone from Venezuela and the bits I've read so far are interesting. More reinterpreting America through the entirety of the 20th century than focused on the 30's and 40's.

I created a country based off both Britain and the United States during the time period of 1860-1929. Really fascinating stuff, especially when you get to the fact that it was the Creedonian's who blew the Maine up and not the Spanish.

Here are the rules for steampunk.
1. Do not use gears as jewelry. The use of gears has to make sense. using it in a non-functional way is a no-no.
2. If you must wear goggles have a reason why. My partner has Fairy hunter goggles. No joke.
3. Remember this era was very classs based, you don't have to be wealthy. But you need to be aware of this.

The approx end to steampunk is 1913, the begining is the start of the industrial revolution. Sky Captian by the way is a classic example of DIESAL PUNK. A closely related but different genre. You can do a civil war steam punk costume, in fact the adventures of jules verne tv series (which was very steampunk) took place in civil war america in part of the show.

It is alot more flexible than most people think, it covers a 100+ year period of human history.

I do not do steampunk, my boyfriend does. I do classic and elegant lolita. Which is an entirely different fashion movement.

I have been doing woodworking. I've made all my own furniture. And then I started making other things. Such as a microscope that looks like the ones that were made 2 or 3 hundred years ago. Someone told me about steam punk a few months ago. I really like it. I'm glad to see so much interest in it on this site.
