Opeth are decent (not black, more like a DM version of Dream Theater). My 13 year old brother is nuts about them.

Currently listening to The Codex Necro by Anaal Nathrakh... HOLY CRAP, that's some pretty intense stuff right there!

I've never been into black metal that much - always been more of a melodeath fan myself - but I occasionally listen to an album. Top bands would be:

Nachtmystium (well worth checking out Instinct:Decay and Assassins: Black Meddle Part 1; not your typical black metal as it has some psychedelic influences. Like them a lot, though.)
Immortal (do I even need to explain?)
Leviathan (the one album / compilation I have is amazingly atmospheric. Great to listen to.)
Bathory (moreso the viking metal era. Definitely not the thrash stuff, though.)

Black Metal is ok, but im not too fond of the vocal style. black metal generally has higher-pitched vocals, which im usually not fond of in the slightest. however, i wont complain if its playing and i probably wont avoid listening to it ^^; i generally prefer death metal, and/or just unclassifiable genres of music with a death metal feel to them

I like some but not all.

Alot of what i consider black metal and like, many others would consider it not to be.

Arcturus is an awesome band, sadly they broke up, hellhammer and ICS vortex focusing back onto Dimmu borgir. Thier old singer, forget his name, heads ulver however, but its hard to find stuff from them.

I also like my Mushuggah. Bleed is just a sick song, with an equally sick video.

But if ya want to take a listen to arcturus, i suggest thier song alone. I can say it does edgar allen poe's poem justice.

I find that Black Metal is mostly too poorly produced for me to really enjoy it, but some of it's pretty good to listen to whenever i get a random burst of testosterone XD

I have to agree with you there - there's much to be said for a lot of older black metal bands' guitars sounding like a wasp in a tin-can, but there's a lot of really good newer stuff, such as World ov Worms by Zyklon, later Anaal Nathrakh, Vesania and Dimmu Borgir, where the production is fantastic :)
