This is my first ever attempt at using pastels. Came out okay, all things considered.

^ Considering it's the first time you've used pastels, I like the rose a lot!

I really like the pastel rose. I had not thought of using plain pastels without sketching the image before coloring it it! Wow that looks great.

I love the photo too. Has fav elements of mine (curved shapes and the color purple!).

Here's a link of one of my newest deviantart additions. I did it in Microsoft paint and I liked it! Turned out better than I thought.

I did sketch it before using the pastels, I had a bit of trouble getting the pastels to cover the lines up.

Great portrait Grebels!
Is that in pastels?
Did you work from a photo?

(also, thanks Mod for re-sized my pic.)

I actually could not tell that you used pencil first. It is amazing.

Here is my first ever full pastel piece.

Thanks noogie. It was oils. I'm not good with pastels. I use a photo reference. When possible I do my own take on it.

Kinnme, I think it would have taken about 16 hours total.

I painted this below as a demo at the street market.

I'm the opposite, I've never been good with paint, not tactile enough.
And very well done, btw :D

I have the same Issue. I feel very disconnected from the process when I use brushes. I have never been able to make anything even remotely passable with oils.
I have made quite a few more pieces. I did 6 of them last night I believe. A few of them I really liked.
Growth Is my favorite one of that set, followed by Rebirth.
