i used to really dislike singers who seemed to be technically bad, or who cultivated an unusual style. but i had a friend argue with me over the course of 20 years that you don't have to be a "good" singer to be appreciated and understood and liked by some people (even if it is just 12 fans at the karaoke bar!).

he thinks there is something important and beautiful about singers who have a drive to express their voice and words, even if the end result isn't great on a technical level. and yes, he's the person who convinced me to start recording. LOL

Random, but when I saw the title of this thread, I immediately thought "sweetest singing voices" until I looked again. How innocent am I? :P

In answer to the question, Justin Beiber and Rebecca Black. I'm sure there are worse, though, and some do like listening to them.

Kesha
Justin Bieber
Jonas Brothers
Christian Bale (gaaahhh)
I also don't like Michael Crawford's singing, just personal preference.

Who are worst singers who are famous and not some person doing karaoke?

Richard Harris. I like him as an actor... well, okay, I like him as Rafer Janders, but MacArthur Park is a crime against music.

I actually love that song. It's so pleasantly bizarre.

As a public service, I listened to this. Don't be afraid to sample it! I didn't mind it at all! The song is bad enough to be funny, but the singing is not as bad as Celene Dion or Michael Bolton. I have to wonder if they were trying to be funny.

I personally dislike any of the female singers who feel compelled to show off their voice with excessive glissando. I don't know their names.

Does William Shatner qualify for this thread? I expected his version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" when I clicked on this YouTube clip.

Could you give us some names as examples?

Yes, and I used to enjoy the work of Raphael Saadiq

I can't think of any, but they abound, especially in popular music.

My least favourite voice is autotune

+1 and you know that autotune will be backed by my least favorite drummer: Drummachine. I can't get to the radio fast enough to change the station when I hear it (them.)

Pete Townshend as a singer...yay or nay?

I go with nay.

Yay. It's limited, but expressive. It doesn't bother me. He is a good example of how hearing the person who wrote the song (in my book) gets a lot of leeway, since I am interested in how the songwriter wants the lyric presented. I wouldn't exactly buy an album of his version of Cole Porter's songbook!

Randy Newman would be another example. Some might find his voice annoying, but I want to hear his version of his excellent songs.

I couldn't make it all the way through this. The drum machine was what made me hate it. Auto tune? I can't tell. I don't mind electronic instruments per se, but drum machines remove any sense of joy and humanity in a song.

I gotta go with yay, for Eminence Front, if for nothing else.

'Course I can admit Jonathan Richman may have the absolute worst voice in human history and still have a spot in my heart for Roadrunner...

Also, must admit I get a chuckle:

(1) every time I remember that this song has both Jerry Harrison (later of Talking Heads) and David Robinson (drummer for the Cars) on it.

(2) every time I shop at the Stop and Shop mentioned at the beginning of the song. 'Tis clearly the one at the junctures of Routes 9 and 27 in the s**thole, errr, town I grew up in. As did Richman, just a bit before my time. But that supermarket's been there for at least 40 years.

Rebecca Black- She sounds as if Fran Drescher was being auto tuned.
Justin Bieber- He sounds like a little girl! Who likes to listen to a 17 year old boy that still sounds like a little girl? Not me!

Eh? I think I need my hearing checked again. You have heard Lou Reed, right? If you listen to his attempts to 'sing' at the top of his non-existent range on The Bells, then you will never say anything bad about Jonathan Richman's singing again. It makes Jonathan Richman, Ray Davies, Ian Dury, etc sound like Pavarottis. I still love The Bells, though :lol

Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit's singing really irritates me. However, the guitarist's voice, Wes Borland's, has one of my all time favourite voices.
