I had a friend that lived next to some people that fit this song perfectly. This whole album brings back many memories. I saw Beck live at First Avenue in Minneapolis very early on, I think before Mellow Gold came out. I think he was the opener; he was solo with just an acoustic guitar and Mic stand. No one paid attention to him and the cacophony drowned out his performance. I kind of felt bad for him.

That's so cool! I've heard similar stories, that he was not well-liked as this kinda of "folkie" performer, before "Loser" took off.
Mellow Gold is a big album for me, too. I can still picture myself holding it in the car on the ride home from the mall. I forget how old. 15? 16?
Earlier than that, I remember hearing "Loser" on the radio when it was new--this old, 80s alarm clock radio I had in my room. My brother and I stopped what we were doing, transfixed. How could something with these lyrics be on the radio? My mom came down the hall then and freaked out, asking what we were listening to.
