This thread spoke to me, so much so that I made an account to post on it.

Gary Numan's entire career has been spent writing songs about lives like ours. It's amazing actually, I've been a huge (huge) fan of his for nearly as long as I can remember, and upon learning about my AS it all made sense.

"Please push no more"

Now I'm behind glass
I talk to you
The telephone lines blind
You have defaced my face
I bet you laughed at me
You bright young things
And now I need no one
I miss you so

Please push no more.

"Ancients"

some can shine
some can fly
some are glorious
some are ancient

some are wise
some are strong
some are everything
you could dream of

some are clouds
some are rain
float like angels wings
on an ocean

some can sing
songs of gods
words so beautiful
they fall like raindrops

but none are like me
all i know is you're not with me
like me

some will cry
cry for you
take your pain away
while you're sleeping

some will die
in your name
give their soul to you
for safe keeping

but none are like me
all i know is you're not with me
like me

"Halo"

Who hasn't made
A big mistake
Betrayed a love
Or turned to hate?
You think it's you

Who hasn't told
A small white lie
Or felt revenge
Was justified?
You think it's you

Who hasn't had
A secret need
A truth to hide
desires to feed?
You think it's you

Who has the strength
To save us all
To make us clean
And break our fall?
You think It's You

Does God bleed on the word?
Does God bleed on your white halo?

I looked inside
A big mistake
I'd make it stop
But it's too late.
I Think It's You

I've never been
Afraid to face
A fear but there's
No darker place
I Think than You.

Something crawls
And something lies
Something breathes
And something dies.
I think it's you

Does God bleed on the word?

"Fold"

I fold your letter
All lies, all cold
I fold my memories
My life, my soul

I fold compassion
And vengeance bleeds through
I fold forgiveness
And wait for you

Do you hear me?
Can you hear me fall?
Do you feel me?
Can you feel at all?

I hear you calling
I hear you calling

I fold all reason
Screaming your name
I fold Your heart and
Feed on your pain

I hear you calling
I hear you calling

Can you feel?

"Seed of a Lie"

Im a ghost in the dark and Im yours.
I belong in the past and Im yours.
Like a song you forget, and Im yours.
Like a dream in the night, and Im yours.

The wrong place?
The wrong time?
I dont know.
The wrong face?
Yours or mine?
I dont know.

Like a tear when you sleep, Ill be yours.
Like a scar that wont fade, Ill be yours.
Like a pain in the cold, Ill be yours.
Like a fear in the heart, Ill be yours.

The wrong word when you cry
I will be
Like the seed of a lie
I will be
Like the germ of disease
I will be
Like the last one who cared
I will be

Like your shadow
I will haunt you
Do you remember?
I said to you
love is a mountain
But harder to climb.
It should be forever
But love is unkind
To me.
Dont let me down.

And you let me down.

Lately I've been listening to a band called "Antony and the Johnsons", you have to sift through a lot of batshit crazy to find the good stuff, but there's a lot to relate to in their catalog. Some tracks I identify with..

"Hope there's someone"
"What can I do?"
"River of Sorrow"
"The Lake"
"Paddy's Gone"

Nine inch nails is a big one, too many to list..

I also get fixated on Steve Vai. I can't say his music embodies anything about AS, but it sure elevates my spirit when I'm down.

Hi. I'm Ian.

Many have already been shared (How Soon Is Now?, People Are Strange, etc). But I have always found that John Lennon's songs, especially those on his albums Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, have always been songs that I have identified with and that capture the aspie experience.

This is the Lennon song I would pick:

The following song was the UK #1 when I was born. It's about a group of under-age kids hanging around outside a nightclub and their sense of wonder at what might be inside:

Great Lennon song choice. That song always makes me a bit sad when I hear it.

When taken out of the context of the story which this song is a part of, this strikes me as an Aspie song.

My take on it: an alienated Aspie turns to drugs to get rid of his disorder, but they only worsen it.

Jimmy Eat World - The Middle
The All-American Rejects - Move Along
Michael Bolton - Go the Distance [from Hercules]
Adam Lambert - Aftermath
Avril Lavigne - Nobody's Home
Avril Lavigne - Keep Holding On [from Eragon]
Fell Out Boy - 7 Minutes in Heaven (Atavan Halen) - especially the part that says "I'll be stuck fixated on one star, When the world is crashing down." I know the song is actually about a suicide attempt but when I heard that in there, I thought of "star" as in "famous person" and how Aspies, including me, can sometimes get obsessed with them.

Here is a link (I hope it works; if not it is worth a search on YouTube) to a video of a great song by the Bonzo Dog Band: My Pink Half of the Drainpipe. It describes how most Aspies feel about mindless chatting. Be sure to watch the whole thing though for the punch line.

I think that Gary Numan song is "Are Friends Electric?"

Here is a song by Randy Newman which is not about ASD, but it is about being different. I couldn't find any other performance on YouTube but this one, but it will do.

got a nervous kind of feeling
got a painful yellow headache
every picture in every
magazine's turned real
every face looks out and
screams at me too real
cold sweat on my collar
dripping to my boots
the waves of nauseous pain
sets off the pressure pad alarms
gotta get outta here
gotta get outta here
gotta get outta here
gotta get outta here
gotta painful swelling brain
banging in my head
gotta painful swelling brain
and i called off sick
gotta swelling itching pain
got me pulling out my hair
gotta swelling itching pain
clutching at my brain
got me laying on the floor
think i left my senses
seems like endless torture
got me pulling out my hair
driving me up the wall
dripping out my eyes
ears nose and mouth
imploding my thoughts
blasting holes in the front lawn now
going outta my skull
burning up my thoughts
tearing me apart

I think the Bowling For Soup song Pictures He Drew should belong here. It's extremely sad thou. A kid's getting bullied & gets depressed & tries to change himself to fit in but it doesn't work out & he ends up ODing :(
He gets on the bus
and goes out to see the world
Lies on the ground and wipes blood from his nose and
Wonders why he's the one that doesn't fit in-
To the pictures he drew
But if only they told him
You're never gonna be like anyone
And that's okay

I've recently been introduced to the world of Aspergers, kinda like someone turned on the light in my dark room. Now my eyes hurt-- I use to think "Conversation Piece" was mine in a very special way, the same as when I read Hesse, looked at Kandinsky and VanG. Now the more I research the more people I find suspected of Aspies. I think I liked being my own little weirdo before I knew that it was some genius club with everyone sitting around speculating on who's an Aspie-- like "great, there's an up side-- I feel better, when I'm walking around with only one sock because I can't find two that are comfortable, knowing that all my heroes are as odd as me . . . "

I do and it really really gets to me cos they're not getting it sand they need to listen to all the words and then they never really say anything about it x anyone else had that

Yes I noticed that as well. Just do NOT send anyone the Saliva song Always & then end up slashing your arm 9x after she blows up at you. It's NOT good to relate to Papa Roach~ Scars like that. That was about 7 years ago btw

Well, since I'm not exactly sure if I have Aspergers or not, I'm not sure if this will be relatable to everyone here... but I've found that this song hits me deeper than almost any other.

Nico - "These Days"

I've been out walking
I don't do too much talking these days
These days
These days I seem to think a lot
about the things that I forgot to do
and all the times I had the chance to

I've stopped my rambling
I don't do too much gambling these days
These days
These days I seem to think about
how all the changes came about my ways
and I wonder if I'll see another highway

I had a lover
I don't think I'll risk another these days
These days
And if I seem to be afraid
to live the life that I have made in song
it's just that I've been losing so long

I've stopped my dreaming
I won't do too much scheming these days
These days
These days I sit on corner stones
And count the time in quarter tones to ten
Please don't confront me with my failures
I had not forgotten them

Damnit, this website doesn't allow me to post URLs until I've been on here for 5 days... well, I think everyone should look this song up on youtube, then. XD

I love this song and it is definitely relatable to me. It was actually written by Jackson Browne. Nico covered it first on her album Chelsea Girl in 1968 and the Browne released his own version in 1973 on his album For Everyman.

Here's Nico's version:

I know this is going to sound absurd but, I feel Rush's song Cut to the Chase describes the AS experience atleast, I'm aware of the drummer of the band being autistic..

Cut to the Chase

It is the fire that lights itself
But it burns with a restless flame
The arrow on a moving target
The archer must be sure of his aim

It is the engine that drives itself
But it chooses the uphill climb
A bearing on magnetic north
Growing farther away all the time

Can't stop moving
Can't stop moving
Can't stop...

You may be right
It's all a waste of time
I guess that's just a chance I'm prepared to take
A danger I'm prepared to face
Cut to the chase

It is the rocket that ignites itself
And launches its way to the stars
A driver on a busy freeway
Racing the oblivious cars

It's the motor of the western world
Spinning off to every extreme
Pure as a lover's desire
Evil as a murderer's dream

Young enough not to care too much
About the way things used to be
I'm young enough to remember the future
The past has no claim on me

I'm old enough not to care too much
About what you think of me
But I'm young enough to remember the future
And the way things ought to be

Cut
Cut...

Cut to the chase
You may be right
It's all a waste of time
I guess that's just a chance I'm prepared to take
A danger I'm prepared to face
Cut to the chase
What kind of difference can one person make?
Cut to the chase
