My teacher wants me to write an essay...

... on Ayn Rand's Anthem. My father says I can do it, so does everyone close to me. I don't think that's possible in the slightest. For one, I don't have the critical thinking skills necessary to anaylze a book such as this. When it comes to attempting to discover the theme of a book, I'm f****d. And to believe I bought a book containing four of Phillip K. Dick's novels. What a waste!

I used to feel that way about essays. An anxious feeling of "I won't be able to make this good enough" would keep me from writing anything down, with the illogical idea that doing nothing at all is better than doing it wrong. Even on exams, I'd get this feeling, and I'd stare at the blank paper until about 10 minutes until the end, when I'd furiously write something down to keep from getting a zero.

And you know what? More often than not, I did pretty darn good on those essays. So just write something down. Anything. Cause we both know you're probably smarter than most of your classmates doing the same thing, and anyhting you come up with will likely be better than what they come up with.

Let's do some problem-solving, giftorcurse.

First, examine the characters. Who are they? How do they interact?
To what consequence?

The question of consequence leads naturally into a consideration of plot.
Who is the central character? What other characters or social forces oppose
him? Consider the rising action ; what events make the conflict in
this story more intense? Consider the climax ; where is the conflict at its
most intense? Lastly, examine the falling action; how is the conflict in this
story resolved?

After that, let's approach the possibility of a theme for this story. Is there
a consistent view of what is right and what is wrong throughout the story?
Does the way Ayn Rand tell the story suggest anything about she views the
world? If yes, what are the consequences of that worldview? To complete
this section, summarize how those consequences may apply to the world outside
the story.

Finally, develop an initial statement of the thesis for your essay; present
the thesis to introduce your essay, and summarize it at the end.

It's the philosiphical framework of Ayn Rand. Let just that she was quite crazy... You can resume it as "socialism is evil", presented with a crazy ideology.

Believe it or not, I'm just about done with the essay. It seems I got upset over nothing.
