Is there anybody else who can't get into The Beatles?

I just can't seem to get into The Beatles, no matter how hard I try. There are lots of Beatles fans here, and I respect that, because I was once a die-hard Beatles fan, between the ages 12 and 15. I heard 'Across The Universe' on a speaker in a bookstore, and I was almost crying, because the memories were too hard for me to take. I was reprimanded for gabbing on about The Beatles, at the age of 13, a few times. I was a kid. I know not to go on about my special interests to people who don't understand them, nowadays. Do you think I'll ever be a Beatles fan, again? Do you know of any Beatles songs I might like? Should I force things? Should I just stick with The Kinks and other London performers, for now? Why can't I get into The Beatles? Am I missing out on a lot?

Well, as the saying goes "the heart wants what it wants", and there's nothing wrong with that, especially when it comes to music. I do think every music fan should be conversant with the Beatles catalogue, simply because they've influenced popular music more significantly than any other artist or performer in the past century. In fact, I take it as an indicator of musical ignorance when I hear someone dis the Beatles as has beens or claim that they're no longer relevant to current music. You still can't throw a stone in the music world and not hit something or someone whose work still reflects Beatles influence either directly or indirectly.

That having been said, one of my best friends is a die hard fan and collector of both the Beatles and the Kinks and where I'm the opposite of you, in that I find the Kinks enjoyable, but relatively unevolved over the course of their career, I don't think he could choose between them. Whatever, dude.

My personal rule of thumb when it comes to music is that I'll give it at least three honest shots at impressing me before I leave it behind. And that's not to say some things don't grow on me even after that. But my 'worst nightmare' scenario would be stuck having to listen to the same limited collection of tunes over and over forever. That's the best thing about being obsessed with music, as far as I'm concerned. There's always something new to discover. Even in the old stuff.

Yeh, I loved the Beatles in my youth, but I also find it hard to listen to now cos a lot of it brings back memories. I still absolutely love Hey Jude though, and could listen to it forever.

Which albums do you have?


The beatles have many different "phases" starting from rock and roll/mersery beat to more creative albums influenced by cannabis and LSD and spirituality.

early stuff used basic instruments just like the early kinks, guitars bass and drums.

Then they started using other stuff.

Ummm, what albums have you heard? They simply have so many and I find I am always in the mood for something in the beatles catalogue.

I love the kinks too, Arthur is an amazing album. It's the Kink's sgnt peppers lol.

I find that the early Beatles are more easier for me to get into. I've also realized that reading what I've posted, this morning, I might have let my parents make me not want to listen to them. That happened over 25 years, ago. I think it's time that I listen to the Beatles songs that I prefer, and put that part of my past behind me. It's also the time of the month that everything gets to me, and I happened to hear a Beatles song over a speaker, at a moment, that I happened to be vulnerable. I'll embrace their earlier stuff, and just leave the rest. It's the later stuff that makes me feel vulnerable, anyways.

It's strange, you remind me of someone from the Beatles. Sometimes we shy away from things that hit us too hard. I love anthropology but whenever I see it on tv or in an article, I get very stressed. Stressed is the best word I can find to describe it. It repels me because I get too intense with it. Maybe you are the same way with the Beatles? Have you seen Across the Universe?

I couldn't understand the apeal until I saw clips from Yellow Submarine on YouTube but I still don't understand why some people seem to act as if they are the masiah.

The Beatles are strange in the way they play out in someone's taste.

If you don't know what Last.fm is, it's a site where a major feature is the charts, each time you listen to a song on your computer or iPod, it gets sent to the site. For example, your profile Top Artist chart shows the top artists you listen to, by playing their songs.

I've noticed a lot of times how I visit a profile of someone who is die hard metal fan, and sometimes the music in his/her's charts is mostly death metal/black metal. 49 out of 50 of the displayed artists are metal bands, but then the number one spot is occupied by The Beatles. This happens a lot with rap fans, too.

This makes me proud to be a Beatles fan.

George Harrison (and his songs) are the best of them, IMO. He did some good solo work and with the Wilburys, too.

This is a good compilation album you could try, CR; "All Those Years Ago" and "When We Was Fab" are interesting commentary on the Beatles, even.

Don't like the beatles at all, not one little bit.

don't hate them, but having grown up with them, I moved on...

When I started taking electric guitar classes my teacher would write the tablature of a Beatles song and would always reprehend me with: "What!?!?! You don´t know this one?!?! Don´t you know the Beatles?!?!
I like them now but hearing that from my teacher was SO uncool....

I like the Beatles, but aren't as big into them as you are with The Kinks. They have good songs though, and even if you can't get into them, you'll probably have a favourite song by them.

I have bad memories about one of my favourite musical artists, and am quite scared to mention them even today. Don't let THAT get to you

I've never been a big beatles fan. I like one or two of their songs like Hard Days Night, but if we're talking 60s music I'm more of a Zombies, Buffalo Springfield, Quick Silver Messenger Service fan.

The Beatles are good. My feelings about them are moderate, although I've throroughly enjoyed many of their songs and I know they were influential. I like their later stuff the best, as the earlier stuff is a little too "poppy" for me. (Which is not to say that I don't like some modern "poppy" songs. I just don't have much of a taste for early Beatles for some reason).

If you want an example of someone who hates the Beatles, turn to my dad. He was a deejay throughout the 60s and 70s and played their music over and over and over again. He is tired of it, and he is annoyed that their music is still everywhere after he's listened to it so many times. My mom, on the other hand, was a teenager when the Beatles were popular and to this day claims they are her favorite. (Although I never really hear her listening to them; she mostly listens to musicians like Edie Brickell and Sarah McLaughlan now, excuse any spelling mistakes because I'm too lazy right now to look up correct spellings).
